Is it possible to repair a hard drive or CD-ROM drive where the power cable was plugged in backwards? What components are likely to have been damaged, just fuses or more serious problems?

Hello,

With the problem posted, if is the the where the power cable is plug in that is damaged on the CD-ROM, there are no fuses or part that can be repaired on where the cable is plug in at the back of CD-ROM/hard drive. You will need to get another hard drive/CD-ROM because this parts are not repairable on systems.

Take care.

I just traced the damage with a multimeter (I'm a real amateur electrician but I can fix simple things I picked up watching people who know what they're doing). Looks to me like one resistor disintegrated, 2 small ICs fried and 3 capacitors damaged. I bet if I can find one someone spilled water on or something I could just take the parts off that and fix it.

I have a inspiron 530s series hard drive and my cd-rom has no power to it

You must open the case, then check the power cable that leads to the cd-rom drive. It should be pretty easy to identify the male/female Sata power plugs. If the cable is not plugged in, plug it, then start the machine to see if the drive works. If the drive is plugged in but still has no power, you'll have to acquire a new cd-rom drive.

Should the hard drive and the cd rom use the same connection cable to a M2N68-AM PLUS motherboard?

It is recommended that you use a separate cable for hard drives, and CD-ROM drives, especially if your CD-ROM drive is a CD burner. This goes for any computer system. Placing a hard drive and CD-ROM drive on the same cable can introduce performance problems, especially when reading from a CD or writing to a CD.

I am wondering if the power connectors have to be in a certain order for them to work or can you plug them in where ever they reach the component you want to hook up?

If you are talking about the cables from the power supply that are made for each component (Hard drive, video car, CD-ROM, etc.) then yes, they can be hooked up any way that fits the setup you have in your case.

The only real discrepancy is that you have to be sure they are coming straight from the power supply. A lot of components do offer a split connection for when connections are limited, though.

Simply put, make sure that the cable you are connecting to something that is important to your computer (Again, hard drive, video card, CD-ROM (not entirely necessary, I guess,) has a solid connection to the power supply.

Hard drives and CD-ROM drives are interchangeable for the most part, though. You just need to watch that you aren't connecting something to a 'dead end' cable where is won't get the power it needs to operate.

As long as it's a straight connection to the power supply though, and the PS has the wattage to handle it, just go for maximum air flow within the case and keep it tidy.

After replacing my psu (was old and it shorted out) my LG CD-ROM GCR-8523B doesn't work. It has power but the computer doesn't recognize it..?

It is possible that when psu shorted it shorted part of the mother board. Try going into device manager right on the cd-rom in the list and choose search for new hard ware in the drop down menu. If this doesn't work go back into device manager right click the cd-rom and uninstall the cd-rom and reboot the pc. If it does not auto find the cd-rom that way, the mother board is probably messed up. Oh yeah try unplugging the ribbon cable for the cd-rom from the mother board and plug it back in also.

Please rate, and write testimonial if you feel the need to, if this was helpful.

Replace the disc drive on hp pavilion notebook

1. First of all, you need to shut off your computer . To do this press the power button on the front of the computer after you have shut it down from Start> Shutdown on your start menu.

2. Unplug the power cord from your computer. This is the big black/white/grey plug that plugs into the power supply on the back of your PC.

3. Unplug the rest of the wires from the back of the computer.

4. Find a sturdy flat surface on which to work on.

5. Unscrew all screws from the back of your computer except the power supply screws. You will make a mess if you unscrew the power supply screws.

6. Open your computer up by taking the side panel off, or sliding the cover off. It might be difficult but it will come off if you have taken all the screws out.

5. Now before touching anything inside, it is a good idea to hook up to an anti-static wrist strap. If you dont have an anti-static wrist strap, just touch the side of the computer where it is metal to deshock yourself. Then when you touch the inner components you wont risk damaging any of them.

7. Find the CD-Rom drive, it should be about 1.5 inch thick 5 inches wide, and 6 inches long. Unplug all plugs from the back of the cd-rom drive, there should be an IDE (wide) plug, a cd plug (small) and a power plug (medium).

8. Once you find the CD-Rom drive, find the screws holding it onto the chassis. unscrew those screws on both sides of the Cd-rom drive. Be careful not to unscrew any screws holding the cd-rom drive together.

9. Now, you just have to remove the cd-rom drive, carefully by sliding it either forward or backward. Check the jumpers on your new cd-rom before moving to the next step. A typical cd-rom drive should be set on slave if it is using the same IDE cable on the same cable.

10. Now that you've removed the cd-rom drive the next step is to install your new CD-rom drive. To do this, simply slide the cd-rom drive in from the front of the computer, controls facing forward. Plug all the plugs back into the cd-rom and screw everything back into place.

Hoew to install CD Drive

Hi,
You want to install a CD Drive. Ok you are Following these steps....
  1. Unplug the power cable from your power supply and open your Computer case.
  2. Determine which drive bay you are going to install a CD-ROM into. You should pick on of the uppermost drive bays
  3. Before you install a CD-ROM, make sure you have the proper jumper settings. You are only installing a single CD-ROM, set the jumpers as MASTER. The jumper settings are different for each CD-ROM drive, so consult your owner's manual so you know which pins to cover up.
  4. Once you have the jumpers set, install your CD-ROM in the computer's case. How you secure the CD-ROM in one of the uppermost drive bays depends on your case. Some CD-ROM drives have to be screwed into the drive bay.
  5. Connect the power to the back of the CD-ROM drive, then connect the ribbon cable to the back of the CD-ROM drive. Your ribbon cable has three connectors, one in the middle and one on each end. The middle connector is a SLAVE connector that is used if you would install an additional CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  6. Connect one of the end connectors to the CD-ROM drive, and connect the other end connector to the appropriate spot on your motherboard. Note, hard drives and CD-ROM drives have the same style of connector on the motherboard. You want to connect your CD-ROM drive to the motherboard slot that isn't red or is the highest numbered of all the IDE slots.
  7. Power on your computer after you plug it in. Your computer should recognize the new CD-ROM. If it doesn't, go into your motherboards BIOS and search around for the IDE channels, they need to be set to automatically.

Adding a hard drive to a PC

You need to set the little jumpers at the rear of the hard drive and the cd rom drive. Set the hard drive as Master and the cd rom as Slave. Both devices should then be recognized.
