SOURCE: Switching from 40GB IDE HDD to 500GB SATA HDD. SATA won't boot.

Hi there
No there is no need to change any jumpers on a sata drive, go into the bios settings and tell the bios to boot from the western digital drive only.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!!

peets, is this drive a slave drive? if so, make sure you have the jumper ******** the hdd set for "slave" , the instructions that came with it and on top of the hdd itself shows you where that is. You should have it set up for this anyways so you can format it to your liking(i.e. if your going to partition it out or use the whole 320GB for your data). after doing this you will need to go to you bios screen when you boot up your computer(setup). Go to standard or advanced bios settings and see if the new hdd is there, your bios should recognize it, if not, make sure you write down all the info for your hdd (size, cylinders, heads, type) and input the info for a correct installation and when you are finished, make sure you save the info (F10) and (Y) computer will restart and it should see the new hdd. Also, I take it you have CD/DVD driveconnected to your primary SATA or IDE port, this should not be a problem, if so send a msg back.

SOURCE: ASUS K8V-MX Motherboard recognizing 320 GB SATA harddisk. Why?

It could be that your BIOS needs updating for this motherboard. Take note of your BIOS version when your computing is booting. Try hitting the Pause key to freexe the screen, but if no luck go into BIOS and see if the BIOS version is listed. You typically get in BIOS by hitting the "Delete' key on your keyboard when the computer starts up and the first bunch of words appear in white characters (might be a light grey)

Hi i bought WD 320 gb sata /8mb hard drive - the cable ribbon on my dell 4600 does not plug into it! do i need a different cable yes

Hi,
Generally speaking, we have two types of hard disk interface. IDE (the old one with ribbon cable) and SATA (with a 1cm strip like cable).
As your new hard disk is SATA, you need a SATA cable to connect it to you PC.
Below are a few images which would help you.

Clear cmos, you should have a clear cmos jumper on your motherboard, just move the jumper from the normal position to the clear cmos and then back. Or you can remove the lithium battery for atleast 15 min.

HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

Hard disk installation

Bummer I couldn't even find that MB on Gigabyte's site, however a more to the point question for you would be: Are you going to use a XP operating system? If yes than down load the drive's Mfg disk software. Usally you can than creat a boot disk to setup your drive. Pay attention to the jumper settings listed on the drive. If its a PATA drive = serial ATA-133/66/33 you will need to set the jumper for a master or slave or master with a slave. If its a SATA and your board supports SATA II you will need to remove the jumper to allow up 3.0gig transfer rates. If your board does not support SATA II than leave the jumper on. If your board does not support SATA I = 1.5gig tranfer rate, than you can not use this in your system.
