If you want to format it for PC, go to partition manager and the HDD should show there, if not use a partition manager program to select the HDD. Now you should format it to NTFS for windows or FAT32 if you want to use it for windows and mac.

We are converting from a PC to an iMac. We backed up all files to the flash drive which is a NTFS format. I soon discovered the MAC is not compatible with it and I cannot transfer my files. It seems...

The MAC can read PC formatted USB flash drives BUT the USB flash drive MUST be formatted in FAT32 not NTFS.
I have a MAC and I also transfer photos from my PC to my daughter's MAC notebook.
You can also transfer files from the MAC to the PC using these FAT32 formatted USB flash drives.

Format drive

Normally you can format a drive by seeing the drive in "My Computer", then right clicking on the drive itself. A window opens up and a choice about hal way down the menu is "format" Be careful that the selected drive is what you want to format, as once formatted, all data becomes lost.

How to format the pc? What precautions should be taken while formating . Because I have heard that data gets lost after formatting.

Formatting a PC is as simple as Erasing all the Data from your PC which includes, Operating system, Software, Computer Memory, Files Etc. In other words, You will have a PC with nothing in it except for BIOS and Booting Files.

These days you dont really need to know how to format a PC. All you can do is, If you have a Operating System Disk like XP or Vista or WIN 7, Insert the Disk in CD Drive and It will prompt you, Do you want to Boot from Disk, Press Y button and it will start loading the File required to Install the O/S. At one level it will ask you Do you want to do Custom Install, and it will giev you details about what it will do, Like ERASE all the Data, click Yes.

Precaution before you format the PC
1. Copy all the Files/Data you need on Pen Drive/CD RW

The Command to Format is ( Used from C:\ or Dos prompt )
FORMAT c:/q/s ( hit enter )

I've formatted my 4 gig memory in a pc , but when it is unable to read in the psp

Format it with your PSP not your PC, you pc will read the format from your psp but not vice versa because you are probably formatting it NTFS and not FAT16 or FAT32, the psp has its own way o formatting it. Thanks

My Freeagent external hard drive doesn't show up on My Computer

Your Mac would have formatted the Seagate drive as HFS+ (journaled) format. If you have access to a Mac, copy your data off the Seagate to any Mac, then use your PC to reformat the Seagate drive in FAT32 format. Macs recognize FAT32 format, and can store data in it, but can't create the format. The Mac holding your data can store it on the Seagate in the FAT32 format, and you can then copy the files to your PC. Hope this helps.
