1) Your chat program is eating all your CPU, you can check on TaskManager
2) Your chat program is eating all your bandwidth, have a look at the little network icon to see how much bandwidth is being used while you are chatting.
3) Is your chat stickam or something? You can't fix that, it's because flash sucks.
4) A poor quality route in your home or at your ISP. Some operate on a first come first serve basis and will keep trying to prioritize connections opened first.
