Question about Sony VAIO PCV-RS530G PC Desktop

1 Answer

My Vaio DVD/CD drive Sony DVD RW DW-U14A hasn't read a disk in more than a year. XP knows its there but doesn't read disks. (Both blank CDs and commercial CD-ROMs like Microsoft Works show in "properties" as all full, free space=0.) I uninstalled the drive and rebooted, so WIndows XP re-installed it. shows the driver update for my model, PCV-RS530G, to be SOFPD-0677403-US.exe But when I save it and run it it tells me its not for my model. I also tried installing the Sony Shared Library update, with the same result. And the same results in "safe mode." Can you suggest a "next step" to try? TIA

Two "experts" wrote that I should clean the lens.
I didn't think that was the problem (because the no-read began suddenly, with no previous read or write errors on the drive) but was ready to buy a cleaner. Reading online I found that the instructions for use came from the cleaner disc, and since discs in that drive are not read I asked both "experts" how I would use the cleaner. Neither answered so I haven't tried that approach.

But today I ran Belarc Advisor and it saw the drive and read the model number but after it it showed "(CD-ROM Drive)".

Could THIS be the problem? Does the machine think the drive is ROM? (That would explain the "disc full" properties report. But it wouldn't explain the no-read problem (my CD-ROM drive DOES read the pre-burned commercial discs) UNLESS it's using the wrong driver because it doesn't know the true nature of the drive.

Hi. Check the transport mechanism of the laser head. The transport can get stuck with dust, hair or vibration. If the transport is stuck, the drive still appear but can't read the CD because the lens is not moving properly.

Clean the area around the lens with cotton buds (be careful not to scratch the lens). Move the lens mechanism away from the center (use a plastic paper clip, slide gently). Place a DVD/CD disc and reboot your laptop. The DVD will auto align the drive during boot-up.

Good luck.

The firmware you are trying to install is for unit specifically released and sold in United States, Latin America, or Canada. The firmware provides read support for 8cm DVD+RW media and will not fix your problem.

To clean and move the transport mechanism manually:
    1. power on your laptop
    2. eject the CD tray
    3. shutdown your laptop without closing the CD tray
    4. clean the area around the lense using q-tip, avoid scratching the lense
    5. move the transport mechanism away from the center/spindle
    6. insert a DVD or CD disc, close the tray
    7. turn on the computer.

The DVD/CD drive will automatically align the transport mechanism during boot up process.

Let me know if you questions. Thanks.

I've just realized that posters ofsolutions apparently don't see each other's posts.

As I wrote to someone else, there's nothing in the tray except plastic. The lens is apparently INSIDE the machine.

    Also, it's a tower, not a laptop.

And what about the Sony Shared Library? Isn't that for my machine (because it too says it's not for my model.)

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

Why my [sony cd rw dvd rom] will not detect a blank dvd disk

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

My dvdrom drive wont let me access the drive

ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds
in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.
