Question about Sony VAIO PCV-RS530G PC Desktop

5 Answers

My Vaio DVD/CD drive Sony DVD RW DW-U14A hasn't read a disk in more than a year. XP knows its there but doesn't read disks. (Both blank CDs and commercial CD-ROMs like Microsoft Works show in "properties" as all full, free space=0.) I uninstalled the drive and rebooted, so WIndows XP re-installed it. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=PCVRS530G&upd_id=1850&os_id=7 shows the driver update for my model, PCV-RS530G, to be SOFPD-0677403-US.exe But when I save it and run it it tells me its not for my model. I also tried installing the Sony Shared Library update, with the same result. And the same results in "safe mode." Can you suggest a "next step" to try? TIA

Let's first address the problem of updates not recognizing the model of the computer (writing that they're not for my model.)

  • ethveg Aug 06, 2010

Again, the proposed solution does not address the basic fact that Sony software does not recognize my model.

Hardware fixes to the drive will not change that.

I suspect that if Sony software doesn't know my nodel that could keep some (VAIO) program from being able to red the DVD drive.

Or is it possible that some other software (e.g., I have now UNinstalled Nero, in the hope that that would help, but it didn't) has "hijacked" the drive; i.e., interfered with Window's ability to read it?

  • ethveg Aug 06, 2010

I've never tried to burn a DVD.

I just put a rented movie DVD in the drive and it shos 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free, and asks me to put a disk in the drive.

The icon in "properties" shows 100% used.

  • ethveg Aug 08, 2010

Under properties the drive shows as DVD/CD ROM (even though it's RW).

    Does that mean anything?

Are you sure it's not a problem with the drive lens being dirty? Did you try using a cleaning CD/DVD?
What does your CD burning software say?

  • ethveg Aug 08, 2010

I've replied to that twice already. Not likely to be dirty anyway since onset was sudden.

Software asks me to put a disc in the drive (even thought there's already blankCD there - as does XP.

First of all I have to tell you that the problem with your cd/dvd rom is not due to the device driver. The most common cause for these kind of problems is the cd/dvd rom's laser itself. Also the link that you mentioned is for FIRMWARE UPDATE (only for use with the products identified and sold in United States, Latin America, or Canada. Not all models are sold in all countries) and not drivers update for your device. As far as the free space on your cd rom, since it's a recording media you will always see the free space as 0 with the windows explorer. Take a look at this print screen from my laptop's cd/dvd rom:
My Vaio DVD/CD drive Sony DVD RW DW-U14A hasn't - 5424145.jpg
Try to remove your cd/dvd device drivers, as you did before, reboot your system and let it install by it's own the drivers that it will ask for; don't force it to use drivers from a specific place. The generic cd/dvd rom drivers are already included in the windows XP. In case that after that the cd/dvd is not working properly, eject the tray and use a Q-tip with isopropyl alcohol to clean up the cd lens manually (you will locate a small glass lens near the center of the tray). Leave the cd tray to dry and try again. If this doesn't help, sorry but you have to check the cd/dvd rom harware for errors at a proper computer store.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.

1`. I had already uninstalled the driver and rebooted, got the "found new hardware" message and allowed XP to install its own drivers.

    2. The drive tray is ALL PLASTIC! No glass lens or anything like it. Just an indentation for the disk, two circular holes on the sides on the horizontal diameter, and a big gap in the upper quadrant, running all the way to where thetray inserts into the machine.

Reaching my finger "inside" I find a gear which, when turned, retracts the tray and closes the door.

    PS:

I don't understand "it's a recording media you will always see the free space as 0 with the windows explorer."

ONLY recordable/writable media can show free space. On other machines (running 2000 and 7) I can see free space on a writable CD.

If not shown on XP, if someone is using the CD like an old floppy, for file saves, etc., how does he know how much space is left?

Since you can't reach the cd/dvd lens try using a cd/dvd cleaner set, a wet one is better. Follow the instructions on the set. The main idea is to put one drip of the included liquid at the set (usually isopropyl alcohol) at a specific place (like small brush) on the disk surface and play this disk. This way the "brush" will clean up the laser lens and after that the cd/dvd player will be able to read the disks. BE CAREFULL not to put too much liquid on the "brush".

I will try this as soon as I get to someplace where I can buy a cleaner.

Then I'll post here about the result.

  • ethveg Aug 06, 2010

I've been looking at lens cleaners online.

It seems that instructions for using them are supposed to appear on the screen. But right now the drive doesn't read any disks. So how will I see the instructions?

Since the cd/dvd rom drive is unable to read the disk, I suggest you to change your cd/dvd rom drive with a new one. It's the best solution for all the problems you came up with this drive.
In case you agree with this solution and if you need further clarifications don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Hi!
The lens seems to be defective one thing you can try if this did not help then replace the drive.Just buy a CD/DVD lens cleaner kit from any local computer store and clean the lens more than one time if you are lucky then the problem get resolved.

First try with another data cable or the Dvd Writer (Ide cable or sata cable which is similar to the existing cable). In most cases, not only the drivers or updates create this problem, but the cable itself. I would also suggest you to try the Drive on another Machine, you'll see the difference. If it's working on another Computer, then the problem is definitely within your system maybe the cable or maybe the connectors or maybe the drivers. Replacing and cleaning the connectors will help you fix it.

It's also important to clean the lens using a lens cleaner (cd/dvd lens cleaner available in the market)

In case, if it's not working on another Computer, then the problem must be with the dvd-drive itself. It could be the Lens, you can replace it, but I don't recommend getting it repaired, it'll cost you not much less than purchasing a new Dvd Writer.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Did you try with a different drive in the same computer... because there is no special drivers needed for the cd/dvd drive in a computer... even if there is a fault in the lens, you will get the same error message like free space = 0...
i doubt your drive lens has lost its life... try using a different drive to isolate the issue....

I'm not sure what your comment means: "to isolate the issue".
    The CD-ROM drive reads fine.
You write that a faulty lens could cause the problem but then write that you doubt that's the problem. What am I supposed to do with that info?

And given the other software incompatibility issue, I'd like to solve the sony compatibility problem first. Perhaps a new Shared Library will solve the drive problem.(?)

Hi. Check the transport mechanism of the laser head. The transport can get stuck with dust, hair or vibration. If the transport is stuck, the drive still appear but can't read the CD because the lens is not moving properly.

Clean the area around the lens with cotton buds (be careful not to scratch the lens). Move the lens mechanism away from the center (use a plastic paper clip, slide gently). Place a DVD/CD disc and reboot your laptop. The DVD will auto align the drive during boot-up.

Good luck.

Sony DVD+/-RW |DW-Q30A will not record cd or dvd & only play dvds

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD , or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

Why my [sony cd rw dvd rom] will not detect a blank dvd disk

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.
