Dell 172FPb problem

I have read several...no, many threads but I have not found an answer. Maybe missed it.

The power indicator is on steady. black screen. No computer connected. I hold a strong light up to the LCD and can see the test pattern moving as usual.

I am not sure what this means...simply bad backlight?? I believe there are 2 (there are 4 connectors). I would doubt both are bad. Is this likely the dreaded 4 C5707 xistor problem or something different. How does one know if the Cclf's are bad or not??

Thanks.

MY SCREEN IS BLACK IS THERE ANY WAY TO FIX IT

if there is no power getting to the monitor ( indicator light ), test the fuse in the power lead first.Ensure it is inserted tightly.
If there is power to the monitor, the green indicator light should be steady, if it is flashing there is a problem with the display

Test the monitor in another computer or laptop.

If t stays black , I'd supect a faulty backlight or more probably a blown power capacitor whih will need checking and replacing

It sounds like it is not getting steady DC voltage, that will be the first place to check.
From the spec, it does not indicate if it has built-in power supply or using the AC adapter. http://www.subincho.com/hardware_review/pdf/fsc_p19-1.pdf

Why does my Dell monitor blink black on start up or wake up

Hello,

The problem you have is an indication that the power supply is about to fail. The repair is a simple job if you can solder. Go to our web site at: www.ccl-la.com and look in the monitor repair section under Dell. This series does have several versions as identified by the last letter in the model number, it will be either c,b or f. We have repair guides for all three versions.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

1905FP Monitor Powers up, briefly shows logo, blacks out.

Look inside for bad caps with bulgng tops, worst case will be shorted out transistors in the backlight inverter circuits or bad lamps. Check to see if you do have he 12vdc for the inveter circuits. See example of failed monitors with bad caps here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

My monitor keeps going into power save mode

Hello,

Its not power saver mode, when the display goes black and the power light starts flashing that is a good indication that the power supply is about to die. The Dell E172 monitors are noted for this problem. We have step by step repair guides posted on our web site at: www.ccl-la.com Click on the monitor repair link. The Dell E172 series actually has several sub models, check your specific model, the sticker on the back will have either E172FPb, E172FPc, E172FPf. We have guides for all 3 versions posted.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

Can a Dell E172FP Monitor power switch be repaired?

Yes. If you feel adventurous you can do that yourself; only a little acquaintance with DIY and a soldering iron is needed.

You need to unscrew the monitor and get the front frame loose. Here you find instructions to disassemble the 172FPB model, which should be similar:

http://www.lcdrepair.us/files/e172fpbinstall.pdf

Of course you don't need to unmount the power unit, you only need to unlatch the front frame.

Once you unlatch the front frame, the power button and the other three buttons will fall off (you'd better tape them to the front beforehand). Behind the power button, you will find the TRUE power button, which is a normal solder-on press-button. Unsolder it and take it to an electronics shop. The button has a body and a peg which goes in: any button with the same body will do even if it has a longer peg (you can cut or sand it shorter). Longer body buttons may not be OK because they might not fit the frame bezel. Anyway, Benq (which is the E172's manufacturer) uses standard components, so I guess a half-dollar will get you a compatible button.

Solder it and close the monitor - and that's it.

10-30-2007, 07:54 PM I have the same monitor and it had the same problem, I got it for $10 at a garage sale because they "didnt know if it worked or not" BS, they knew it was broke. But i accepted the challenge. There are four transistors on the power supply board detailed as Q759, Q760, Q739 and Q740. It is usually just two that go bad on these monitors, but instead of hassling with testing all four, I would recommend just replacing all four. Here are some replacement part numbers. I used NTE2524, same as NTE2525, and paid about $1.25 each.
and here are Sanyo parts (hard to obtain):
2sc5707 C5707
2sd1803
2sd1804

ECG2524

The transistors are rated at 60v 20w.

Just wanted to share my success story. Hope this info helps someone. I found my info on some other forums that i can't find right now.

Dell Blinking Power Light

Just wanted to say Thank You for the info on this site. I had the same problem as previously posted. When powered up, the monitor showed a fast flash of the desktop and then went black, with the power indicator flashing green. I read the posts, purchased the capacitors and the 4 - 2sc5707 transistors through ebay. I ordered them on the 6th and rec'd them today. I only had one bad capacitor and one transistor that checked bad, but I ordered 5 caps and 4 transistors. When ordering the caps be careful of the height of the caps. I found this to be a problem because I ordered the 50v, 105 degree Panasonic caps that didn't fit with the enclosure attached, so I used the 4 good caps removed previously and replaced the bad one with a 470uf, 50v. 85 degree cap from Rubycon I found among my spare parts. Installed the parts and the monitor is working properly (for the last two hours) so I'm happy for as long as the repair lasts. Thanks again for the info.
