Hello,

To boot from the system simply place the bootable CD into the CD-ROM drive, reboot the computer, and the system should detect the bootable CD and boot from the disc. If the system is loading to an error message when attempting to boot to the CD or loads into Windows,.
Verify other CD discs work in the drive. If the drive is a bad drive it will be unable to boot from the disc because it cannot read from the disc.

Verify either in the system you are using or another computer that the CD is readable. It's possible that the CD is bad/corrupt or not readable. In this case, get another copy of the window xp operating system.

Take care.

How can i install windows 2000 in a dell optiplex 3020?

If you want a clean install just format your XP drive. Then boot with your 2000 cd in the drive. Make sure it is bootable and your bios is set to boot from cd.

Dell OptiPlex 780 with Windows 7 does not play my cd's or dvd's and is missing from device manager

Sounds like a problem of non-detection by the system. If the drive is missing from My Computer then it definitely is a non-detection issue. Try using this file (it's an exe when unzipped) and only required double-clicking.

Well i just bought a dell optiplex gx620 (full tower) and im trying to install windows pro but every time i put the disk in the pc and turn it on it keeps saying that theres no bootable device...so i tryed...

From the info you supplied...

Boot (power off/on) and go into the BIOS (Usually hit F2 as it powers on and the white bar goes across the bottom for self test).
F2 will probably be listed as an option along the top (right). You only have a limited time to hit the key.

One of the menus should show what devices are connected (CD, hard drives). Make sure the system sees you're hard drive and CD-DVD. If the CD/DVD is not listed anywhere I would guess it is not installed correctly. I am not sure if the 620 will support an external USB C/DVD. This is another option and again, boot order would have to be changed.

Another menu has boot order. Make sure CD/DVD is at top of the list since you stated the drive is blank. I would make sure hard drive is second in the list. Save/Exit BIOS

Be CAREFUL MAKING any CHANGES to the BIOS.

Windows XP CD cannot be detected in Dell Optiplex gx260

Your optical drive might be dirty or bad. Try an official Dell disk to see if it will read it, especially a Dell drivers and Utilities disk. Also try a boot flash drive or boot floppy(since your system is a older) to get the system up. If your system comes up any of those ways, I would try a disk cleaner. If that doesn't help, then you probably have a bad cd drive. You could also look in bios setup to make sure the bios is showing your cd drive. It should list it there somewhere. Probably on the first page.

Dell Optiplex GX50 won't load windows OS

Which cdrom is it? Is it a windows XP cd? This is an older PC? Does it have a floppy disk drive? Try downloading from Barts a bootable floppy disk, set boot order to floppy in BIOS, change to cdrom drive letter after booting to floppy (D:?)
got to I386 folder and set up from there.
More info would be helpful.

NOT DETECTING CD ROM

Hi,

Although the BIOS in this old machine has a boot from cd option, it is quite possible the DVDrom drive simply doesn't support the feature. Many P2 machines were like that. Chances are you will need a bootable DOS/WIN95/WIN98 floopy which will allow you to get it running with a CD driver.

Once you have this accomplished you can simply use the command prompt with cd support boot option and use the command prompt to load the installer on the CD. Once it finishes it's initial setup it will be able to use the cd drive for everything BUT booting.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris

Dell optiplex gx280 won't boot up

you either have the boot priority in the bios off or you have improperly cabled your hard drive . perhaps you set it to boot to cd while installing the operating system and forgot to change the order back.
The floppy drive does not have to be present for the system to boot (if set to "not installed" in bios)
your boot devices are your cd/dvd rom and your harddrive.
Seeing as you've recently replaced the power supply , ime assuming you didnt dismantle the whole computer , just the power leads coming from the power supply, which means you only moved power , not data cables.
This would be the first thing to check -- power to the harddrive and cd rom, the 4 pin connector that sometimes connects to the motherboard and any data cables you might have bumped while changing the power cables. check these things and post here again.

when the pc in post usually on dells bios there is a boot menu option it is usually f12
if you don't know what your doing in the bios it is not a good place to test your skills after pressing F12 just choose cd rom for boot

My dell optiplex does not boot and when i try to reinstall it wont boot from cd

I wonder what error message you're getting.
Click here to enter your service tag and to find out if your PC is under warranty. If it is then call Dell and your're good to go.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Run the on-board diagnostics: (essentially F12)
http://www.mss.net/Links/DellDocs/OptiGX260/UserGuide/advtshoo.htm
If it's not making it to the Windows splash screen then this should lead you in the right direction. If you have decided to reinstall and are booting with the OS CD-Rom, but it's not booting you will need to adjust the boot order to include the CD-Rom in the BIOS.
