Question about Microsoft Computers & Internet

Using Windows 7, my .msi files keep being opened by the Notepad. When I look at "Defaults programs" I noticed that the .msi files as well as the .msp files are associated with the Notepad? How can I get the correct association for .msi and .msp files?

Right click on the one of the files go to open with and it should give you the option to choose the default program.

How to Load or Reload"HP Digitalmedia archive" file and 'EZARC.msi to my HP Pavilion a1520n desktop. (XP)

Try this one:
This document pertains to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs with Windows 7, Vista, and XP. An error appears that contains a filename ending with MSI. (MSI refers to the Windows Installer.) This error can appear while Windows is starting up or when a particular software program is opened. This error might appear after using a Registry Cleaner or Registry Fix tool.
See the following error examples. Your error might be slightly different, but it has a filename that refers to or ends with MSI.
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in the box below.
'HPProductAssistant' the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

  • HP application recovery process (Windows XP)
  • If errors persist, you can clean up the MSI registry entries by using Microsoft's automated solution. For more information, see Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled (in English).
Preventing MSI errors To prevent these errors from occurring, make sure that registry cleaning and spyware removal utilities do not remove files and registry entries associated with your software. Instead, if you no longer use a particular software title and want to remove all references from the registry, remove the software by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. The software uninstaller will remove the associated entries from the registry.
Some products available for free on the Internet suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning. However, use extreme caution when installing and using a registry cleaner. Many registry cleaners generate other MSI errors because they do not recognize valid registry entries and delete them. This can cause more MSI errors and prevent other programs from working.
If you do decide to install a registry cleaner, be sure to research the product thoroughly, and then download and install programs only from software publishers that you trust .

My Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop has Windows 7 and is trying to open programs in Notepad...

This depends on what your opening for a program Notepad as you know is a word processing program so it will open text documents. You may have to see what program your trying to open and find the appropriate software for doing so then set it as the default for this type of program. You can set the defaults in the control panel where is says default programs. Tick this if it is a word or text file you can use Notepad if you do not have Word or Office installed. If it is email then choose the appropriate email software you are using for email and music files under Windows Media Center until your get the hang of default program settings. All this is allowing you to do is set the opening software to run the program your are opening. John

Why do my database files open up in notepad whenever I click it, is this normal? help please...

You have notepad set as your default text reader. If you have Word installed use that as your default. So go in set up your default programs you can do this by going to setup default programs in the start menu when you get there look for your default programs for .doc files etc and set it to open up using Word or whatever Word program you have other than notepad. It will not harm your computer if you open .doc or .txt files using notepad.

If you want a free Word Document for Office files or for writing purposes go to Open Office it is a free word processor Click Here, that does not cost anything and will even open most Microsoft Office documents as well. Thanks for using FixYa! John

    Error 1722

You may encounter the following error on installation:
Installation ended prematurely because of an error
when trying to install 32-bit or 64-bit qlikView on Windows 7. With or without UAC (User Access Control), installation fails.
    Suggestions to (re-)install vbscript.dll using regsvr32 vbscript.dll in the c:\windows\system32 (64-bit equivalent) directory didn't help.
On execution of the installer, c:\program files\common files\wise installation wizard has a new msi added that includes the full installer for the qlikView application.
Installation worked by opening your command window (Start -> (All Programs) -> Accessories ->Command Prompt (right-click and run as Administrator) by calling the msi, above, with a few switches:
    msiexec /a WISB3[...].msi
    That worked.
The command-line registry fix as below
    reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f
    didn't do anything...

    Hi Princess Tina,

It sounds like the registry keys needed to recognise and open msi files are missing or incorrect.
Paste the following into a new file (eg. with notepad) and save the file with a .reg extension. setupmsi.reg will do ok. Then double click on the saved reg file and add the keys to your registry. (The first line "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.0" must be the first line in the file).
