Question about Palm m515 Handheld

1 Answer

My Palm m515 is going crazy! Clicks through dates (was into Dec. 31, 2023 before I could get it to turn off last night), goes to screens other than where I select or freezes & won't turn off for many attempts. Was fully charged but doesn't keep charge long when removed from cradle. I mostly just use the date book, but don't want to lose the data. Any ideas?

Palm pilot will not stay powered up. It has power for about 3 seconds then goes blank. There is a full charge on the battery too.

Sounds like it is time for a new battery. Not expensive.
Google for palm 515 battery and you should find a few places. Worth doing if you can do yourself or if you really like your 515 ;-] Labor cost on top of the battery might be the deciding factor.

I was given a pilot m515 and i do not know anything about it. no instructions. i need to know how to turn it on and also, the slot where a "card" might go is empty. please help or steer me in the right...

hi betty .. the m515 is a nice machine still, and worth getting to know .. the card slot is for storing extra things its not needed to run the m515 ( you can put in an SD card if you want to store a lot of stuff but the m515 has lots of memory inside already ... you can charge the battery or run the unit on the charger ... push the top right button and the unit should come to life .. if you hold the on/off button for a few seconds then it will turn on or off the display backlight .. if the unit fails to start then you can do a "reset" .. that will reboot the machine and fixes most problems.. the top of the stylus unscrews .. this gives you a small probe that can be used to reset the machine .. on the back near the top is a hole marked "reset" .. poke the probe in there to reboot the palm ... if you want to do a "hard reset" (erases all data) then hold the power button in while you poke the reset .. that will give you a choice to "erase everything" .. if you chose to do that then you would be starting the palm like it came out of the factory .. all phone numbers and such would be erased ... that should get you going .. there is a tutorial included in the palm that can get you started .. if it works on the charger but not on the battery or if the battery goes dead quickly then new batteries are not expensive but you need a really small torx tool to get the back off to change it .. you can take it with you to the hardware to match it up with one .. if the battery is ok then you should be enjoying you palm about now ..

How do you turn on the Palm m515

the palm m515 has a button at the top right corner .. hitting the button quickly will turn the unit on or off ... holding the button for 2 seconds will turn the display backlight on or off ... if the unit fails to start then you can do a reset .. thats like a reboot .. the top of the stylus unscrews ... that gives you a little probe that you can use to push the reset button on the back top center ... if the battery is bad you can still run the machine with the charger hooked up ..

M515 Palm Pilot

here is your manual in PDF form
www.palm.com/us/support/handbooks/m500series_ug.pdf

if the unit was new then you would charge it for about 10 hours .. but since its not likely new then it doesnt hurt anything to just leave it on charge ... you can even operate the palm while its charging .. over night charge should be enough to get pretty close to full ... the palm internally automatically turns off the charge when the battery is full .. so you dont have to worry about over charging .. if the unit wont come on then you can do a "reset" (back at top)

The right hand corrner is all black and looks like ink

It sounds like maybe the screen got a crack, fracture in it. It is LCD and it 'looking like ink' kind of points in that direction. It will have to be replaced. If you are up to the task, many replacement screens are available on the internet. I would try eBay first, that is where I got my last one. But unless you are totally comfortable with opening up you m515, take to a service tech.

Softwares required

Sorry, but Palm is not providing an upgrade (at least for the M515 model) to a newer Palm OS (from the 4.1 that you already have). Palm is not known for supporting older products (yours dates back to about 2002).

As for bluetooth - the unit does have an SD card slot, and there are SD Bluetooth adapters made, but I don't know if they would work with OS 4.1 (and neither does Palm). Additionally, the cheapest I found after a quick search was $117 bucks. For a little more money than that, you can buy a new Palm, with OS 5.0, and bluetooth built-in. Wish I had better news for you...

Cheers
Nick

I was having a similar problem with my M515.  I had originally installed the Palm Desktop from my CD, which was an older version.  When I totally uninstalled the old version and installed the newer version from the Palm website I was able to do a successful sync.  I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate and Palm Desktop version 4.1.4

M515 green light on and dead screen

Hey, i had the same problem. My m515 stayed with the green light on for 3 days until the battery died out (and lost all my data). I keep the m515 off and without recharge for 2 more days. Then I recharge it in its craddle and it seems to be ok. Good luck
