Two winding arbours are in clocks with chiming, because there are two separategears in one clock and each one is driven by separate mainspring. Description for winding is: Wind each spring as long as you do not feel significant resistance. As soon as you feel the winding goes too hard - stop winding.

I believe the grandfather clock I was given was over wound by the previous owner. Is there anyway that I can fix this myself so that it is affordable?

If you have the patience, you could try the following.
Set the pendulum in motion - this will slowly wind down the mainspring. The clock will probably stop after a few seconds. Set the pendulum swinging again as necessary, and if you're lucky the period that it ticks for will increase each time.
You will need to be patient and persevere - what you are doing is very gently releasing the tension on the mainspring.
This is not guaranteed to resolve the problem, but it won't harm the clock or your bank balance to try. Failing that, there is a mechanical fault that is causing it not to wind and you are strongly advised to place it in the hands of a reputable and competent clock repairer.

Have old Seth Thomas Metronome ,only key turn about 1/4 turn.Is that normal for vintage one.

It is not normal. Metronome should wind almost the same as a clock. The cause for this 1/4 turn of a winder is that the driving spring do not unwind completely. That means there are mechanical or oiling issues. Show your metronome to any clock repairer (not the watch repairer) and he/she should be able to fix that.

I have an early 1900 clock that I have to wind. I have noticed my clock stops frequently. I go to wind it and it is tight to wind so instead of over winding I tip the clock to start the ticking and the...

You can not unwind the clock yourself, because this requires proper clock makers tools and skills as well. Clock is stopping because it has not been serviced for a long time and the oil in clock has collected dust particles and getting sticky. This does not let the spring unwind freely and is a problem for all cogs and moving parts. Find your nearest clock repair shgop and ask for cleaning, oiling and adjusting. BE AWARE: If you are gonna try to unwind it yourself, you will damage the clock's movement, but most important - you can even brake or loose your fingers, as the clock spring is under unbelievable tension and once released, it uncoils lightning fast and is sharp as a razor.

Does anybody know which way i'm supposed to wind my cartier santos watch? Options: clock-wise, counter clock-wise, or multidirectional?? thanks

mcdevito75 here, Generally your Cartier watch is wound in a clockwise direction simply, due to how it:s made, in this direction the mainspring is tightened or wound and turning the crown in a counter-clockwise position only free wheels the winding mechanism. I would advise you wind your watch in a multi direction, however not to the very, very end of It"s winding capacity, once you feel the crown getting tension only 4--5 more multi-direction turns should be enough to maintain a good wind to your Cartier watch.

mcdevito75 here, I believe you"ll need a special winding key to wind your Seth Thomas Clock, Best Bet, look for a small watch repair shop in your area, they may be able to order a key for you, have all info regarding the clock with you. Winding keys may also be on ebay under Vintage Clocks/watches.

Setting the correct time on Seth Thomas clock.

Correct technique definitely is CLOCKWISE ONLY. You are unbelievably lucky person if did not damage striking mechanism within 25 years while adjusting hands anti clockwise. If I'd have such a luck, I'd try to play lottery. :))

Don't know how to properly wind Elgin 400 day anniversary clock

Wind the clock until there is a sudden increase in resistance (it is then fully wound). So not apply a great force, as older clocks may be weaker and overloading the spring may break the termination and result in a new spring being required.

If you think it is becoming too stiff, just stop winding and see how long it runs for. I have often heard the term "over winding at clock" but have never quite understood the term. As a retired engineer I think that springs that break because of overenthusiastic winding are probably near the end of their life anyway.
