Short circuit..on the board? hmmm..the data will still be on the disk itself..but you'll need a professional data recovery option...look in your local area,,there's usually one around

There is no way of fixing this hard drive, if you need to recover your data, then there are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing but here go: Link

Spare parts for components are very rare to find, even on eBay. Official companies will not sell them so they can only come from taking apart an already working HDD.

It clicks and the drive won't come up

Bad news. If it clicks, then in 95% of cases the hard drive inside is broken. Rarely it may be a power supply problem - always worth a try to swap the power supply for a different one, with the same voltage (12V if I remember well), same plug polarity (plus inside IIRW) and same or higher current rating - you may be lucky...

IF YOU HAVE VALUABLE DATA ON IT, refer to a data recovery center; they will probably be able to recover most of your data, but it will cost you quite a lot. Google for "data recovery" and you'll find plenty.

READ THE FOLLOWING COMPLETELY!
Some people report, that putting a drive in a freezer for some time (minutes, not hours) sometimes lets the drive start afterwards, making it possible to copy the most important files from it, until it heats up again. I once recovered one important thing from a dying drive this way - the drive died completely shortly afterwards. REMEMBER, that this freezer trick is dangerous and may kill your drive instantly. Two reasons: 1. Condensation on a cold object - moisture will condensate on the drive, also on the electronics, and can short-circuit it instantly upon power up. 2. You try to operate a drive beyond it's allowable environmental conditions, and it can fail mechanically. So you can try it on your own risk, and be prepared to kill the drive completely.

SmartDisk FireLite 40 GB Hard Drive makes a clicking sound..

You will need to recover the data using something like this data recovery program.
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to take out the hard drive from mac and put it into a Windows computer as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.
Good luck.

How to extact the data off the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB HD

if its your motherboard that crashed then ther is no problem with your hard disk. connect your hard disk to any other computer and you can access all the files in it.
if it is your harddsik that crashed then try recovery utilities like western digital data storege manger or any other disk recovery tool available for free. if still it fails then you can recover your data if you hand over your hard disk to the nearest service centre. but recover from a hard disk only if its very valuable. thay will charge you per MB of data recovered
