Question about Makita MAC2400 Electric Powered Air Compressors

1 Answer

My Makita MAC2400 air compressor keeps blowing the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker to the compressor not the one for the house. It will only run for about 15-20 seconds before the breaker pops. I have had it for a couple of months and only used it a few times. The oil is in the center of the sight glass. The few times that I ran this unit before this it worked but took forever (probably 15min) to fill to 90PSI. Does anyone have a solution?

Your compressor should fill within 5 min or so. Here are a few things to check. As compressor is running check all air connections/fittings with soapy water (including regulator, drain fittings and quick connects). Repair as needed. If no leaks, unplug compressor and listen for air leaking from check valve at tank (remove 1/4 airline at checkvalve, brass valve at tank). Replace checkvalve as needed. If no leak at checkvalve, problem most likely valve plate in head of pump. The valve plate has two reed valves that sometimes break. Bad reed valves will cause compressor head to become very hot and discharge air will be hot. Replace as needed. Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com. Good luck.

Mac2400 leaking air at oil breather hole

I have read both your questions and after taking both into consideration it sounds like it needs new piston rings. On a gas engine it is called blow by but both have a piston with rings on them, as they wear the end gap gets bigger and bigger allowing compressed air to bypass the rings into the crankcase where the oil is, the breather is there to allow air from the room to enter and exit as the piston goes up and down to avoid pressure or vacuum in the crankcase, the air on the top side of the piston is supposed to go into the tank but in your case some of it is going around the piston rings and into the crankcase building pressure and blowing oil out. There is not much inside a compressor like a gas engine, taking the head off and the oil pan should let you take off the connecting rod bolts and push the pistons out the top. This answer is based on the two comments of cant build all the air pressor and it is blowing oil out the crankcase breather. If you hit the 80 psi and unplug the compressor can you hear air coming from the limit switch box that the power cord goes into ? I will wait for your answer to continue.

Keeps blowing internal breaker

The unit rated at 3 HP at 115 volts draws 13.8 amps is odd, a HP in watts is 745 and should be about 2200 watts and 19 amps plus a efficiency loss. Odd to see the ratings don't jive with electric theory/formulas.
The compressor should be connected directly to the wall and if using an extension cord, the cord needs to be #12 AWG or larger to avoid line voltage loss and over amping of the motor.
Here is contact and support info: For more information, please call 800/4-MAKITA (800/462-5482) or visit makitatools.com.
My bottom line is, A 115V motor circuit needs 10 amperes per horse power or 30 amp circuit for 3 horse power. Using extension cords calls for upgrade in wire gage of the cord. The advantage of using 230 volts is it cuts the amperes in half and allows use of smaller gage wire. Watts, or volt amperes is the product of volts and amps.

Where can I buy a Makita Mac2400 air compressor regulator

Makita parts are available at WWW.toolpartsdirect.com A small universal regulator may also work if the fittings match-up. When using a universal regulator make sure that the regulator fits thru the hole in the panel or just adjust the hole size. Universal regulator costs about 20 dollars. Good luck

The regulator is leaking air and will not support the air tool I am using

They do not show the regulator as serviceable. It looks like you have to buy a complete new regulator. It is part #410028-E. You can find it on this link reference #42.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Gently start rocking the fan GENTLY back and forth by gripping it in the large center area and see if it will rotate. If you ran it completely out of oil; the piston, piston rings or rod end bearings will seize up. If you can not rotate it by hand and your sure it has locked up... you are going to have to overhaul the pump or replace it. The link above is a good source for parts.

Before considering an overhaul... read out the motor windings after the pressure switch to see if the motor windings are open or read a resitance value under 480 Ohms.

Depending on the motor pump used most of them have thermal overloads that will self reset when the unit cools off. It should self reset in less than 15 minutes if there is one. Ones without a thermal overload end up cooking the motor windings or tripping the house circuit CB if they run out of oil.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

My Makita MAC2400 runs for a long time before it buuilds up pressure.

Probably has a piston sealing issue.(piston sleeve and ringseal aren't sealing as they should) Check owners manual exploded parts listing to get either the piston kit or appropriate parts for the repair.
