I have a phillips rear projection tv model no 55PP8620/79. Its showing a a red haze and poor picture quality. How do I fix this?

If the red haze is not convergence---that requires parts.

The set has three picture tubes---with set unplugged and back cover removed clean the three large lens that are topside---as for the red haze a quick way to know what is wrong is with set on turn the color to zero----what color is the screen? Should be black and white--if red to some degree tracking or screen controls may need adjusting inside the set---Yellow picture in that situation is a different issue.

My 50 in Phillips rear projection has a bad green tint and switches to a bad red tint what can I do?

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Your convergence has failed and needs to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed. You can call in a repair shop or you can get the parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com and do the repair yourself. Its a fairly easy DIY fix.

Magnavox PTV910. The picture is good but color is bad

the coolant in the blue and green crts has congealed which is causing the red tube to become dominate. The coolant can be changed at home. You can get the phillips coolant replacement kit at the following link which contains the coolant and the CD with instructions.

Can i fix it myself/ phillips/magonavox 60 inch tv big screen

When you turn the color all the way off do you get a black and white picture? If not you will need to do a grayscale adjustment. Turn the brightness and contrast down until you get a black screen. Then advance the screen control on each CRT until it just lights the screen and then back it off to just black. If one of the colors does not appear then you can adjust the master screen (usually on the HVT) and then readjust the other two. If this doesn't help you can try to clean the projection lens on each CRT. If anyone smokes in your house then it's possible that soot has built up between the lens and the CRT. Separating the lens from the CRT can be complicated and even dangerous. I would have a TV shop check each CRT and see what they recommend. This can be done in your home. Good luck.

Blue Color spots on all pictures

Call a technician, sounds like an Integrated Circuit problem and would cost you about $250.
