The most common cause of the problem you just described is a lid switch malfunction or lid strike (actuator) problem. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that will not drain.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike" or "Actuator") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because it does NOT have a lid strike (actuator) and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This type of switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator rod by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The average price of a replacement lid switch is about $25 - $35 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices will vary between sites so shop and compare.

Another cause of a no drain issue can be a clogged drain pump or drain line. The following link explains how to access the drain pump and replace (if necessary):

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3794382-replacing_water_pump_whirlpool_top

These pumps are strictly mechanical (no electrical connections) and have one moving part - the impeller. You will need to remove the drain lines to inspect the pump interior as these pumps do not come apart. Check the drain lines and impeller area for any lodged items.

CAUTION: You will need to drain the wash tub PRIOR to removing any of the drain lines. A quick and easy way is to use a wet/dry shop vac to remove the water. If you do not own a shop vac, simple gravity will work by placing the drain hose on the ground and allowing the water to run out. If this is not feasible because of the washer location, you will need to bail.

If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. These are very simple repairs that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.

If this advice does not help you enough, repairclinic.com has a Repair Manual you can order to assist you with all your repairs. The part number is 1170635 and is priced at about $20.

Searspartsdirect.com also has a repair manual for about the same price. Part number 4314044L. I hope this information is helpful to you.

thank you so much- I think this is exactly the problem of our washer.
if it can be fix just like this...I will be very happy that one less washer in our limited landfill:)
only thing though, how do I know the right part for out whirlpool washer?
I can't even find the model number anywhere? saw a number SM 8280867 under the lid-is this the model number?
    thanks!!!

Spot on! I found that the lid switch caseing was loose and the toggle portion of the switch would just pop right out. With a little pressure tape wrapped around the main assembly after the control arm was put back in everything works great. I would suggest that the switch just get replaced but if you're in a tough spot like I was you can temp fix it until you can purchase a new switch.

Hello,

Fisher/Paykels are notorious for bad drain pumps. If you hear any kind of squeeling, grinding, chattering, or such while it is drying to drain, you have a bad pump. P/N 479595

hi there.
If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing.
If the washer won't drain the pump belt might have broken or might have worn out. Check the belt and replace if it shows signs of excessive wear.
Drain Pump
If the washer won't drain water the drain pump might be defective. It's also common for a small sock or other article of clothing to get caught in the drain pump or in the drain hose. Check both for an obstruction before replacing the pump.
Other Causes and Conditions
Clogged Pump or Hose
If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing. Keep in mind that any water in the washer will pour out of the hoses when removed.
Drive Belt
If the washer won't drain, should check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't drain properly, if at all.
Lid Switch Assembly
If the washer won't drain the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.
Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly
If the washer won't drain the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.
Drain Hose
If the washer won't drain water check the drain hose. Be sure the hose did not get kinked behind the washer. Also, remove the hose from the pump and check it for obstructions.
Coin Trap
If the washer won't drain the coin trap may be clogged. This washer is equipped with a device near the water pump called a coin trap. The purpose of this device is to trap any foreign materials that make their way down the drain. Normally, the coin trap can be accessed through an access panel. It is designed with the homeowner in mind and is normally easy to clean out.

Our LG Tromm WM1814CW frontload washer is not draining in the spin cycle, but its only sometimes. We have tried cleaning the Filter and its clear, we looked in where the filter is to see if its clogged,...

hi Shellinator7.
check the small drain hose on the side of the pump that is clogged, then that is not a failure that will significantly affect the normal operation of the washer. If your washer is not draining okay and you don't mind catching some water that spills out of that pump filter area when you open it up, then you don't necessarily need to remove that front panel and bother with unclogging that small drain hose. If the large hose between the tub and the pump or the discharge hose between the pump and the house drain behind the washer is clogged, then you may need to open up that cabinet.

Machine will not drain or spin

A washing machine won't spin if the water can't drain. Check hoses for any kinks or clogs that may prevent the water from draining. If a hose has kinks, try to straighten out the kinked hose. If it can't be straighten sufficiently, replace the hose. If hoses are not kinked, check for clogged hoses. This can be done by using the screwdrivers to remove the hoses and looking for clogs or running a water hose through the clogged hose to remove the clog. Use the rags and bucket to clean up the water that comes out of the hoses when they are disconnected. Once the clog is cleared, put the drain hose back into place. The washer should drain and spin now if a clogged or kinked hose was the problem.

If the washer still won't drain or spin, check to see if the lid is not closing all the way or if the lid switch is not clicking into place. Close the lid and make sure that it closes all the way down. When the lid closes, the lid switch should click. If there is no clicking sound, then the switch may need to be replaced.

Another possibility for a washing machine to not spin or drain is the pump. With the back panel still off the washer, check the pump with the voltmeter to ensure that the pump is getting power.

I have a maytage epic front loader, its flashing F21-book says drain problem, How can I fix it?

HI, check the following to address this issue.

1. Clogged drain line or water pump
Check to see if there's something stuck inside the pump or the drain hose connected to the pump (pump is usually located at the bottom and towards the back of the washing machine).

2. Water Pump
If the drain line isn't clogged, you may have a problem with the water pump such as a frozen pulley or a broken impeller. If that's the case replace the water pump. Note: if you have a belt driven washer, check the belt(s) for cracks, as this would be a perfect time to replace the belt(s) if needed.

3. Drain Filter
Check the drain filter for clogs as well. This filter can become clogged overtime, preventing the free flow to exit the drain tube. It is located inside the unit, mounted on the pump housing.

**The most common issue will be an obstructed hose or, line

NOTE-If the hoses filter, and pump check out ok, this will confirm that there is a serious within the actual control sector(Timer module or control board). It should be replaced i this case.

My kenmore he2 plus washer is showing f21

"F21" is a Long Drain error. This occurs when the drain time exceeds 8 minutes. You will need to remove the bottom panel under the door by removing the two screws at the bottom edge of the panel. First, check the electrical connections to the drain pump and make sure the pump is running. Check the drain pump filter to make sure it is not clogged with debris. This is a very common problem. HINT: Before removing the drain pump filter, pull the drain hoses from the standpipe at the wall and use a shop vac to pull a vacuum on the drain hose to get rid of all residual water from the pump and drain lines. This is also a good way to get rid of minor clogs. If you do not own a shop vac, be prepared to lay down some old towels and soak up some water. There's quite a bit of residual water in the wash tub and lines (this is normal). In addition, check your drain hoses to make sure they are not clogged or kinked. If you check everything and still have the error code, replace the drain pump. Replacement parts can be found at searspartsdirect.com and repairclinic.com. Just type in your model number in the search menu. I hope this helps you. If you require further assistance, please let me know.
