Question about John Deere Garden

Open Question

I have a R92 john deere. If you turn the key you get nothing. You can start if you take the positive cable from the starter and touch it to the battery. i have tested the clyinoid and key switch, and both tested fine. so i hooked all back up and nothing with the key. will still jump start from the starter though. It will only run for about 5 to 10 min then just dies and the battery is dead and needs a charge. Any ideas would help out a ton at my wits end with this thing. Thanks

percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.

You have a defective ignation coil. When the engine gets hot, the winding in the coil opens and the engine stops. After it cools down, it will again make contact and start again. If you don't know where the coil is, follow the wire from the spark plug. The spark plug wire is attached to the coil from the factory. It's easy to replace with a 1/4 inch socket set. Set the magnet to coil gap with a standard business card.

SOURCE: I have a John Deere R92 Tractor and the tractor

Eric, I think this tractor has a kill switch that operates by connecting a hot lead to ground. Follow the two wires from the switch. If I am correct, then one of them won't go too far before it's connected to a stud on the tractor frame. This connection is probably corroded. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I have 2000 john deere 420 and it wont turn over

The starting circuit is dependent upon the clutch safety ans PTO being off. Here are some steps to take:
1. Ensure battery is fully charged
2. Turn key on and turn PTO on then back off. Listen for clunk
3. Press clutch in fully and turn key to start position. If still no sound at all, hold key in start position and move clutch foot up and down, listening for solenoid click. If click but no crank, starter or solenoid or battery cable connection is bad. Start by wiggling cables, looking for any looseness. Next check solenoid and cables. If that doesn't fix it, starter or solenoid may be bad. There may be a fuse in the circuit. Check them out also.
if it cranks but doesn't start, you have a fuel or ignition problem. Good luck. Let us know what you find

How to test a solenoid for a John Deere 115 Lawn Tractor with 42" deck?

John Deere Starter Solenoid Kit AM138497

First make sure the negative battery cable is making good contact on the frame or what ever part of the mower it is connected to. Make sure both battery cables are clean and not corroded and are tight. Then try to start the mower. If it works, fine. If not then you will bypass the solenoid and see if the starter turns the engine. To bypass the solenoid take a car jumper cable and connect one clamp to the terminal on the solenoid that goes to the battery ( see the diagrams in the links above) Turn the ignition switch to the on position. Take the other end of the same color of the jumper cable (say you'll use the red clamps) and touch the clamp to the other large terminal on the solenoid, which goes to the starter. If the starter turns the engine, then you know the starter is good and that the solenoid is bad. If the starter does not turn the engine then the starter is bad. make sure you DO NOT touch the jumper cable to the starter case or any other ground.

John deere 6300 starter

Well, you know the problem is not the starter. So, If you have a test meter, check for voltage on the small wire of the solenoid with the key in the start position ( positive meter lead on the small wire/terminal of the solenoid and negative lead to ground) . If you a reading of approx. 12volts then; the starter switch is working, the safety cut out switches are working. I would venture to guess the solenoid is not working.
Nice tractor!!!

My 155c John Deere will not start! Brand new charged battery....I turn the key...nothing(no clicking either). When bypassing it to cellinoid, it starts right up. When I shut off the mower, I have to...

Usually when the key is turned to start position the starter soleniod engages thus applying power to the starter. There are three possible causes to your problem . (1) Check for 12vdc at the terminal on the soleniod when the key is turned to start position, if there is 12vdc at the terminal then the key switch is good. (2) loose or bad cable connection at the soleniod, check connections. (3) bad soleniod -- replace it. generally you will hear a click from the soleniod when the key is turned to start position. Also be sure to check that ALL safety switches are engaged. You may need someone to sit in the drivers seat so that switch will be "made" / engaged. Park Brake is set, mowing blades are "NOT " being engaged, on some mowers if the transmission is in reverse ,even tho the brake is set the mower will not start.

John deere lt 133 won't start

If you hear a clicking sound but no joy on the starter, you may have a bad starter solenoid. Follow the positive cable from the battery, it should end up connected to the solenoid. The post the battery cable connects to should be adjacent to another post where the cable connected to that post leads to the starter, you can check by carefully crossing the two posts with a small screw driver or some other piece of metal to see if the starter will turn over, (be very careful not to touch any part of the body of the mower with the screw driver). if the motor turns over with the crossing of the posts but not with the key, then more than likely that is the problem. Replace the solenoid. NOTE: you do not have to have the key turned on for this test.

John deer mower

Possibly just the fuse. But if you say the jumpers WERE positive to positive and neg to neg it shouldnt have been a problem but maybe the pos clamp touched the body. That would have cooked the battery. First check the fuse, if thats ok then connect your neg jumper lead to the chassis of mower to neg of truck and the pos to pos of truck and hold the other end to the large terminal on starter motor. This will bypass everything and only test starter. Engine will spin over if starter motor ok. There will be a strong spark when touching terminal so watch for fire hazard.
