Question about Hitachi EC12 Portable Electric 2hp Air Compressor, Oil Lubricated

1 Answer

I have a Hitachi compressor EC12. Motor runs okay & air pressure gets upto 125 psi, however, its not giving out any air on my output hose. what is wrong with this? I would appreciated if you could tell me how to check the problem or fix it. Thanks. Randy.

When the pressure reducer fails, it may leak around the adjuster or it may close as yours has. A temporary fix would be to remove the safety unloader or a tank pressure gauge and install a tee fitting replacing safey or gauge and install a quick fitting for air. You will only have tank pressure available however this is a temp fix untill you replace the pressure reducer. You do not have to replace with factory parts, there are generic parts available at Lowes or similar stores. For factory parts go to www.toolpartsdirect.com. Good luck with your repair and post again if you have other question.

Air compressor will not restart after it builds pressure and pressure drops to 80 psi

Make sure the power cord is plugged into an adequate extension cord if one must be used. Never less than 12 gauge wire.

The start/run capacitor may need to be replaced.. If there are any ball check type valves, make sure they are not worn or sticking. they would be on the output of the compressor head itself.

My Hitachi EC12 builds pressure, shuts off, then air escapes

I have the same compressor with the same problem. I have temporarily eliminated the thermal reset with a piece of 12 gauge hard wire and it runs just fine. However, I do want to replace it before the warm weather come to the north. I tested the draw at 15.5 amps and the reset was a 17 amp. I am told by someone with superior electrical background that I need to install a 20 amp thermal reset in it's place. I have found that mine runs best when plugged directly into a 20 amp circuit and when using an extention cord I have a 10 guage cord that will carry the load needed to run the EC12. I have also changed to 100% synthetic oil.

Compressor fills,drains off a little but won't

sounds like the pressure switch is fused shut, more than likely it needs to be replaced, most single stage pumps should shut off at 125 psi max.

My hitachi EC12 compressor starts up and fills the two tanks. When I connect my hose, the pressure in one tank drops to zero, then goes back up to about 60 psi, then very slowly builds back up to max...

how do you know one tank drops to zero unless you have a pressure gauge on both tanks sounds unlikely unless you are looking at the gauge on the pressure regulator

Hitachi Compresor runs, but no air pressure

About the best that you could do is compromise between using one cord and more hose. Your compressor draws about 15amps and will probably draw more as the units heats up. One 12 gauge 100' cord will most likely give you enough power to run the compressor (do not use 14 or 16 gauge). (depends on strength of outlet) There is a voltage drop of about 7.5 volts on 100 feet but should deliver 15 - 20 amps. Best to test with meter as compressor runs to prevent damage to capacitors. Now for the hose, that leaves about 250 feet to reach project. Pressure drops in the hose depending on inside diameter up to 40 psi per length. If you used a 1/2id x100 hose at the compressor then the rest 3/8 id or maybe 1/4 you may have enough to power your gun. Another consideration to get more pressure is to use maybe 100' or more threaded pvc pipe or metal pipe 3/4 or 1"id. Finally to get plenty of volume at the gun, you could use a small air tank (3-4 gal) at the end of the run then another jumper hose from the small tank to the gun. Unusual circumstances/challenge makes for unusual solutions. Good Luck on your project.

My EC12 builds up pressure, but then releases all but about 10 psi.

The non-return valve is sticking and it's an easy fix. First, for safety, unplug the electric power to the unit and release any pressure in the tanks. Then unscrew the cap of the non-return valve (between the compressor and the tanks). Inside you should find a tapered rubber plug which is probably sticking in the valve housing. Sand down the diameter of the large end of the plug, being careful not to damage the flat face at the narrow end (which is the sealing surface). For sanding try 400 or 600 grade wet-or-dry paper and sand until the plug just moves freely in the housing. Reassemble and the compressor should work. Incidentally it's an oil-type unit, and quite durable. Make sure it has enough oil.
