you dont need the internet to sync, and before you restore your phone you will be given the option to back up, you dont need an internet connection to create a back up either but you do need the internet to restore the iphone as it connects to the apple gs server. also your best restoring from the comp you use to sync. you dont have to restore your iphone as new then as you will have previous back ups on there.

Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it. Reset
To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears. You can tell iPhone is connected to the Internet over a cellular data network if you see , or in the status bar at the top of the screen.
Do you have problems connecting to any other wireless network with your iPhone?
Have you tried using the forget this network option on your iPhone for your wireless network followed by trying to connect to the network again, and/or using the reset network settings option on your iPhone which erases all previously saved wi-fi connections that you have successfully connected to with your iPhone? Manual states that the iPhone needs to be reactivated. Connect iPhone to the computer and open up iTunes if it does not open automatically. How are you resetting it?
Are you pressing and holding the sleep/wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears.Then drag the slider. Then press and hold the sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Then manual has info on what to do when iPhone is exceeding the operating temp. but nothing about cold temp.
