I get the line error E-16 message when I try faxing to a particular number from this machine (Sharp FO-IS 125N). I am able to send and receive faxes with other numbers and I can send to that number on different machines. Suggestions??

I have a copy of the manual and that specific line error message is not listed to know what the problem is. The line itself has been checked and is in working order, the machine was even tried on a different line and still had the same error message to that same #, but worked to another number.

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2010

The receiver has restarted their machine and are receiving faxes from other machines without difficulty and are able to send to my machine. Also, because they are not within the same company and are not having the problem, they are not willing to look into it as much (ie-try another machine).

I'm not sure what you are telling me to clean or how to clean... is there a specific part?

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2010

I have read the instructions in the manual and have done 1-5, now I am looking for more specific advice from someone who has fixed this problem previously (6). Please do not send a quote from the manual.

A line error 16.This error comes up when Transmission or reception was not successful.press stop to clear message and try again. A line error shows when machine cannot communicate correctly with other fax machine.the error is usually due to problem in phone line. The error itself displays "LINE ERROR" . Press stop to clear message. If the error does not get clear then check the following:-- 1) Check the connection. The cord from TEL.Line jack To the wall jack should not be more then Six feet long. 2) make sure there are no modem device sharing the same telephone line. 3) Check with the other party to make sure their fax machine is working correctly. 4) have you telephone line checked for line noise. 5) Try connecting the machine to different telephone line and sending the same fax on which line error is showing. This will help to confirm the fault. 6) If the problem still the same then it requires service, as the problem is in the fax machine. Its a partial error,in this type of problem the problem gets spolved for sometime then repeats again.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

It is when I try to fax to that number, "line error" shows up on the screen and the printed report says "com E-16"

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2010

I see. Is there a DSL connection on that line? you need to use DSL filter if you are connecting to a phoneline with DSL connection.

  • Anonymous Aug 11, 2010

no, there is no DSL connection on that line.

In most cases, this error is displayed when there's line problem with the receiver's machine. As per my experience, i've come across this error with sharp copiers and faxes several times, but this error code isn't clearly mentioned in any manual or hasn't been provided by Sharp. We used to fix it after replacing the machine at the other end (receiver's machine). But not so sure, sometimes it worked itself without doing anything. First of all, tell the receiver to restart his/her machine and try send a fax again. If this doesn't work, let his/her bring another machine and try again. If it works, then the problem is definitely with his machine.

Suppose if I send a fax from a hp machine to another machine which isn't working properly, i get error like line busy which is not true. But for sharp it's different and since Sharp didn't any specific cause and solution, I can help you only up to this.

I wish you good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I am a tech that Services Sharp. Enter simulation mode using # * c * after you are in run test command 66-10 This problem happens from you getting a bad fax mostly from noise or interference to the line. if it happens a lot to you then try getting a power filter with network and fax ports.

I can not receive a fax

Hi there, Fax machines are still in common use today despite the widespread adoption of computers along with their multiple communication tools, including e-mail and social networks. Fax problems can include trouble receiving faxes, dialing issues, faxes not printing and poor print quality. Performing periodic maintenance can help with fax problems. Check any visual indicators for trouble. Many fax machines have a display panel and use it for reporting error messages. Often the messages are in plain text and can be understood without referring to the instruction book. Refer to your fax machine'smag-glass_10x10.gif instruction manual for any numeric error codes.
  • Step 2.Replace the cables. In particular, replace the telephone line cable that runs from the wall to the fax machine. The plugs can become lame, and the wire itself can break inside, providing no visual indication it's broken.

    Invalid number

Fax machines do not work well or at all on digital lines. They are designed for analog lines, like the standard phone company line. You may have to install a dedicated fax line from your tel. company.

Can't receive fax but can send

Call your cell phone from the fax machine and check the caller ID to make sure that it is the correct number for your fax machine. Next, call the fax machine from you cell phone, and make sure the fax machine rings. Problems like these are almost always a phone line issue, not the machine.
