I had the same problem. After replacing the USB cable with a good one the scanner came back to life.
I suspect scanner has a higher requirement for USB data transmission thats why printing and copying work but scanning does not.

True. ALL fax machines are analog devices. Internet phone lines are DIGITAL.
There is no way to make it fax reliably.

Your printer has a bad IP Board. If it is still under warranty you will have to take it in to an authorized Canon dealer and have them replace the board. Other people have given the solution that it just needs flashed because the boot information is corrupt or missing. This is the case but there it no firmware to download to correct the problem. The board has to be replaced. The repair for this can range in price but the dealership around me wanted $660.
