Lots of noise on LCD display

The quality of the LCD display is bad (lots of noise and purple vertical stripes) in bad light conditions. However the quality of the pictures taken under these conditions is good.
In the troubleshooting section of the manual they say it is because the display is automatically lit up under these conditions.
Is this true and acceptable? The quality of the LCD display of a Sony DSC-W5 is a lot better under the same conditions than that of my Canon Ixus 860 IS!!
