It sounds to me like you missed the "shifter knob" on the shift shaft when you installed the transmission back into the case. If your transmission was shifting correctly on work bench, it should at least shift from first to second gear.

You're going to have to pull the transmission back out of the engine case. With the transmission out of the case, look into the the transmission cavity and hold the shift lever so that the short shift arm is level parallel to the bottom of the engine case. Mark the outer end of the shaft so that you can verify that it is still level once you get the transmission back in the case.

Now, put the shift lever (lever you shift the transmission with) temporarily on the shift shaft and support it some way so as to hold it level. Install the transmission. Now, before finishing the installation job, check to see if the shaft is still "level". Install the four bolts that hold the "acess plate" of the transmission in and try to shift through all the gears by turning the mainshaft and having someone hold or turn the countershaft. Make sure the transmission works before you finish up the job.

If the transmission still doesn't shift. Take it back out and work with it in a vise until you figure out the problem. It'll probably be something to do with the shifting mechanism rather than the gears.

Good Luck
Steve

Ford transmission problems

3000 rpm's isnt horrible since your torque converter doesn't engage until 1100 rpm's or so. A possible adjustment might help your shifting problem. so you might want to visit your mechanic
a rebuilt trans is never going to be like new. it's going to be different since some parts are used parts with 120K. this is if you mean the vehicle has 120k on it, not the rebuilt trans. If the rebuilt trans has 120k on it, the story has just changed and its not a nice ending.

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.

On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

I have a 1995 chev. tahoe, transmission won't shift into 3 and od, motor just revs

Ok if you have 1st and second gear and it shifts to neutral instaed of 3rd , that means the 3-4 clutches are burned up.This is common problem with the 4L60E transmission and the transmissionwill need to be removed and rebuilt ot repaired. The 3-4 clutches are the weak point in the trans and i usually use a z-pack when rebuilding them.It increases hold capacity and durability.

98 5.7 4x4 trans shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and

This is most likely the first signs of transmission failure. There's not much you can do aside from getting it rebuilt. This should be a 700 R4 they're a pretty easy transmission to rebuild, however you want to do it sooner than later. Many of the parts can be re-used IF you don't let it go too long. I've rebuilt hundreds of these and I'm here to tell you that I'd rather not destroy 500-600 dollars worth of hard parts if I don't have to.

I have a 94 silverado with a 4l60e trans. 1st and 2nd gears shift fine 3rd and o.d.does not engage.i had the trans. rebuilt 9 months ago. is my problem the shift solenoids or the fuse for the trans. .

how it sounds that the solenoids are going bad i would take it back to the shop were you had it rebuilt and have them redo it most shops give a one year warranty on the rebuilds if so they should be able to fix it for free.
