Question about Toshiba 42AV500U 42 in. LCD HDTV

1 Answer

Colors are off on the TV. When I try to adjust the contrast and brightness, etc from the menu, either everything is orange or green or yellow.

Contrast and brightness won't fix it.You are on the right path though. You need to search around for a color adjustment. You should have numbered scales for all 3 primary colors to adjust. It should also be somewhere under the picture option.Let me know if you need better instructions.Good luck!

I just checked mine and all it has is a color adjust, not the 3 primary colors.I did notice though that the option for it was down farther on the list for contrast, brightness, etc. to the point where it was not visible. So once you get onto your picture option, keep scrolling down and it should appear. Is that why you did not refer to it?Contrast is to make darker and lighter colors just more/less noticeable compared to each other.Good luck!Hope that helped!

Just bought one of these used and need to adjust the color brightness contrast etc. I assume I do this thru the "menu" option. I don't have the original remote with the unit and I can't get any universal...

Try website like Remotes.com to buy the original remote it ur best bet.Tries the manual control on the tv.Push the Menu button use the channel + - and the volume + - on the manual buttons to adjust colors, contrast, brightness.

COLOR IS OFF. REDS ARE WEIRD AND YELLOWS ARE TOO BRIGHT. RESET TO MFG.SETTINGS BUT STILL OFF

Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo2_bing.gif STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video.

Pic of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

Set after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Poor picture quality

Hello Paul. I have this same monitor, but rebranded, Access the service menu with the remote control:

With user’s RC
1. Power TV On
2. Press Menu button and call up User OSD Menu
3. Select Sound-> Balance
4. When Balance value is “0”,Enter 0->5->3 ->2 in sequence.
Note: If necessary, re-do number keys.
5. Factory OSD appears.
6. Press the standby button then AC turn off and restart the TV, which can exit factory
OSD menu.

Now you will be able to change the values for Red Green and Blue channels. I also hated this TV, but after adjusting the colors it's looking great! Hope you could fix it too! :)

Adjusting color/ user mode??

The TV will not let you set brightness, contrast, color or tint in the preset modes like Vivid, Movie, Standard etc. Look for a mode that says custom, user etc..

My 42AV500U LCD TV acts like a ghost is pushing the volume-down button! When this happens, I push volume-up on the remote, and the volume bar goes up and down like it's competing, but volume go all the way down if I let go. This happens about 10% of the time I use the TV. It seems to happen more often in humid summer weather (yeah, sounds crazy), but that's the only flaky connection I can see. What's puzzling is that it usually happens after the TV has been on a while and is warm, but can happen from the start or after an hour, so it's not a temperature problem. Sometimes, the problem is infrequent and sometimes it's pretty agressive and I can't get the volume to stay above zero. There's a bit more: I use an antenna, and I can use the menu's add/delete channels feature to skip some channels when I surf channels up and down. What's goofy is that some of them will not "stay" turned off, like 5-2 and 7-2, but other subchannels will stay off. So, after I pass the channels once or twice, they reappear as being turned on. Lastly, and this happens rarely, I turn the TV on and the LED power indicator lights up and I hear TV sound, but the screen's backlights don't come on. I turn the set off and on again and all is well. I took the back off the TV and blew out everything with clean compressed air, including the control buttons on the side of the TV while bouncing them to make sure they are clean and free (they are). No improvement. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what may be the cause? I didn't find a software update for the TV.
