Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

Ya if i only could reload win7 and yes u will lose all info on hdd even the dummy password he put on to lock hdd amazing only thing it wont reload windows

Step 1:
Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

Note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

Note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

Step 2:
For Windows users who switch and upgrade from Windows Vista, one difference will be immediately noticeable when installing or upgrading to Windows 7, i.e. Install Windows 7 setup wizard no longer prompts or asks for user selection of which edition of the operating system to install. Instead, each Windows 7 DVD disc or Windows 7 ISO image will automatically install the preset specific edition which it's confined to.

Although Microsoft does not provide an universal "one disc rules them all" Windows 7 installation media, however the function is indeed supported. User just need to delete and remove the ei.cfg from any Windows 7 ISO disc image to convert the image into universal disc of any edition Windows 7 installer. For user who has the ISO image of Windows 7, and wish to make it an universal installer for any and all supported editions of Windows 7, as shown in illustration below, now has an easier way to modify the ISO. Instead of manually unpacking and extracting the content of ISO image (or copying files from DVD) to HDD, deleting the ei.cfg and then repacking or rebuilding installation files back into ISO to burn, user can now eliminate troublesome procedures by making use of "ei.cfg Removal Utility". clip_image001.jpg The ei.cfg Removal Utility is a simple tool that will disable the ei.cfg from any Windows 7 ISO disc image, thereby converting the image into a "universal disc" that will prompt the user to select a preferred edition during setup. ei.cfg Removal Utility works directly to patch the ISO image, by toggling the deletion bit in the UDF file table to instruct the operating system to ignore and remove ei.cfg, or treat it as if it does not exist. Best of all, ei.cfg Removal Utility can reverse the patching to restore the ISO disc image to its original state when the tool is been used to apply on a disc image that previously been patched by the utility. ei.cfg Removal Utility is a standalone portable app, and thus no installation required. In fact, the program does not have much user interface. After selecting the target Windows 7 ISO, the disc image will be patched right away. So make sure a copy of ISO backup is done. How do I make a recovery disk?

Which operating system ?

there are some you can download

If you computer crashes and your hard drive fails, you can lose a lot of data and spend a great deal of time trying to find all your discs and re installing all of your information.

It can be very difficult to find and re-install your operating system if you do not have the original CDs that came with your computer.

But if you create a recovery CD for your computer, the restore process can be much faster and quite easy.

Put the blank CD in your CD writer.

Click on the Windows Start button.

Click on the Control Panel option.

Click on Backup Your Computer from under the System Maintenance section option.

Click on the Backup Your Computer button on the Backup and Restore menu.

Select your CD drive from the drop-down list and press the Next button.

Click the Start Backup button to begin the backup process.

you might need to use dvd rw depending on the size of the backup

c) The System Repair tool will search for a valid operating system and will report that Windows found problems with your computers startup options.
Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer ?

d) Click Repair and restart and reboot again to the Windows 7 System Repair environment.

e) Click Next at the keyboard selection prompt and when the System Recovery Options screen appears verify that the Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows is selected.

Note that on your Dual Boot system there now should be only one operating system listed.
Click the Next button.

f) Now from the menu list select the Command Prompt option.

g) At the DOS prompt type the following three commands

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

bootrec.exe /fixboot (may return an Eliment not found message)

bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

h) Close the command prompt window and click the Startup Repair option.

i) The repair process may take some time, so wait until the process completes at which point you will see two messages Windows cannot repair this computer automatically and Startup

Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

These messages are the result of the radical changes made by removing the other drive.
Ignore the Send/Dont send options.

J) Close this message window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the Send/Dont send window.

Next click on the View advanced options for system recovery and support option and from the main menu once again click Startup Repair.

This time the repair process may only that a few seconds and when prompted Startup Repair could not detect a problem, click Finish and run the Startup Repair option one more time, click Finish, and then remove the System Repair DVD and click Restart.

Reboot the computer.

Hi , i cant install canon pc1230d in windows 7 computer. Thanks

There is no driver for your unit under Windows 7
Workaround :
If you are under Win 7 Ultimate or Pro or Enterprise , you can download and install a free virtual version of Win XP from : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
This is the ultimate solution to ANY compatibility problem. You just use XP mode to do operate your device then go back to Win 7 in one clic where your modern processing software is.
Under other versions of Windows 7 , you need to have the XP install disc to install a virtual version with a third party software such as WmWare Player from

Hi there !

You operating system is corrupted and needs to repair or reinstall the operating system. But I suggest just run the repair mode.

If your windows 7 installation disc is not working, it means the Windows 7 installer DVD is not working properly, maybe the DVD have too much scratches or due to bad copy of installer DVD, (it is not working in CD, use DVD) try to use other Windows 7 installation disk and surely it will run the Windows 7 DVD set up menu.

I hope it helps you.

How to install windows 7 operating system

To Install the Windows 7 Operating System (Win 7 OS):

Instructions for a "Clean/New Windows 7 Installation:

AFTER BACKING ALL YOUR DATA THAT YOU DON"T WANT TO LOSE, Do the Following :

1) Insert your Genuine Windows 7 System Disc (Retail or OEM System Installation Disc).

2) Close down all programs and restart your computer.

3) As soon as the computer restarts, you should see a prompt that says something like this: "Press any key to boot from cd/dvd"

....So press any key!... This will boot to the installation disc and prepare for installation or repair (we are going to be installing windows, so ignore the repair options you see on the screen).

*If you don't press a key in time, you will see that the computer will attempt to boot from the hard disc drive instead... if that happens, restart the computer and press a key when prompted.

4) Depending on your particular Windows Version, you will see a prompt that says something about "Do you accept the license terms?" Click "Yes" or "I accept", etc.. and continue on...

5) Choos Custom or Advanced Settings (the other option is for an upgrade..)

6)Select the desired hard disc drive, (HDD aka Hard Drive), Select "Drive Options", and follow the onscreen instructions "Delete the partitions" (Do not Leave another windows installation on the same hard disc drive, unless you are experienced and know how to "dual-boot" properly!) Delete the Partitions.

7) Now choose to install windows (be sure to select the newly deleted empty (unformatted) partition. Windows 7 will automatically format the drive for you and will begin to install windows 7. Follow the onscreen instructions and within a half an hour or less (depending on your hardware) you will be finished, just be sure not to leave the computer unattended while performing a windows installation, since it requires your input quite often to proceed.

That's pretty much all there is to it!.. if you have any more trouble...
Google it or Bing it.... Search Engines are awesome!.... Enjoy!

*NOTE- If your windows 7 disc is a "Upgrade" disc, then you must perform an upgrade while running your previous/older windows version, since Windos Upgrade Discs aren't bootable, they simply patch the older version, replace system files, etc... to transform the previous windows installation into the target/newer version. If you want to perform a clean install, be sure you own a Windows 7 Installation / System Startup Disc.
