First make sure both drives are the same .
Find your old DVD drive and remove the P.C. board.
Then install it in the consoles drive that had red ringed

the drives pc board is married to the box and can not
be separated in order to recognize games and not get banned
on xbox live.

this is for a Hitachi drive , just search for your drive on this
site , there are basically 4 styles of drives and you may
need to unsolder wires depending on the drive . if you
have any questions feel free ask.

Hi there my xbox 360 will play dvds/cds but will not play games it just says play dvd when a game disc is inserted in the console can you please help me thanks mr shane arnell

Sounds like the Xbox 360's disk drive is starting to fail. Knocking on the top of the Xbox (when its on its side) while loading a game can sometimes get it to work, but its better to have your Xbox repaired or replace.

I got a 360 off ebay and it wont read 360 games but will read cds and dvds, whenever i put a 360 game in it says to insert disc into an xbox 360 to play, can you tell me wants goin on please?

You need to replace the dvd drive . most online shops like console sourceDotcom have the replacement dvd drives to specify the dvd your have you can open your 360 and look or go to google and search LLama mods and there you find the types of dvd drives pick out the 1 that matches your dvd drive and place an order and they have all the how to's on how to install your new Dvd drive for your xbox 360

There is a software component missing. You should show it from the place you bought it. they should be able to fix it.

My xbox 360 plays games as dvds!?

I doubt you put all your games :). your XBOX 360 is probably hacked to play homebrew games. that happens when usually a new protection is enabled on newer games, every several months new protection is issued to restrict piracy. the only thing is to get it hacked with a newer DVD-ROM security override.

I put a new drive in my xbox 360 and it wont play games

every DVD drive is "married" to the motherboard. They both have a special key that keeps them together. Without that key the motherboard will not accept the DVD drive and it won't be able to play games ever again. You can extract the key from you old DVD drive and "spoof" it to the new one. That's the only way it'll work.

Xbox 360 wont play the games but will play cds and dvds !!!!

Mocrosoft only entended the warranty on the "ring of death" issue which was hardware related to overheating.  They did not extend the warranty to any other issues.  DVD/CD emulators and the games emulators are handled by different software.
You can try a factory reset of the console...

Before trying this, it's highly recommend that you remove all hard drive and memory cards. Once you've removed all hard drives and memory cards, navigate to the systems tab in the main menu and select the “Initial Setup” option. Once you select the option, it will ask you if want to run the initial setup that occurred when you first started your console. Say yes and it will do its thing. When it asks for a memory card/hard drive, just decline and it should be done. You should see the default dashboard screen as confirmation that it did, in fact, rerun initial setup.

Resetting to factory defaults / resetting parental locks
This might work only with older versions of Xbox 360 dashboard.

Press the following key combination

Left Trigger, Right Trigger, X, Y, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Up, Left Bumper, Left Bumper, X

This should give you a dialogue asking whether or not you want to reset your system to factory default settings.

If none of this works contact Microsoft and see if the console is still under warranty.  If not they will repair it for usually 99.00
