Question about Air Conditioners

2 Answers

I have a Coleman Central Air/Heat System. This year, the outside compressor (or whatever it is called) is shutting off within minutes of the air conditioner coming on. This is resulting in the home never cooling down. I can reset the system by shutting the air off inside the home for a few minutes and the outside compressor comes back on, but again, only for a minute or two, and the unit only blows what seems to be room temperature air.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I purchased the home with this system already installed, so I don't have the manual. The system has worked well until recently. It is a Coleman Air Pro, Model Number DRHS42B. I have also been unable to locate a sleep switch. Is it outside on the main unit?

Do you know the devices model. It would help in locateing the manual. also I beleave you have the manual?

As micromaster already said, check for sleep timer.

has the system worked fine before has something been changed?

This is quite difficult problem to solve with just text.
I would also recommend you have a tech check it out as it can be a hardware issue.

Why does my PTHP. shut off and switch to electric resistance heat?

im guessing its there way of defrosting the coils , as with this type (small) its tough to defrost the coils in an efficient way , hp runs normal to within one or two degrees of setpoint , hp shuts off or reverses in low speed , back up heat comes on to complete the room heat and to generate the heat needed to defrost the coils , entire unit shuts off when set point is reached , reversing valves set for heat and wait till next cycle

now mine does something slightly different : it runs for fifteen minutes and if set point is not reached it switches to back up and reverses the coils ,leaves compressor on (low speed) , this heats the coils up and defrosts the outdoor unit , and if it runs long enough twenty minutes total time , it goes back to normal and aux heat shuts off . this drives me insane thinking how much im spending on heating the outside !! but im sure its needed to prevent ice build up on outdoor coils ,and I sure don't want that cracking with ice formations

During the heat of the day (100 degrees) the compressor shuts off. had the coolant checked, the presures checked, cleaned the air handler and outside coils.

You either have a compress overheat issue or there is a problem with the control box either next to your heat exchanger.

EM HEAT.... does it stand for ECONOMY HEAT or EMERGENCY HEAT? They both conflict. Someone's misinformed.

It stands for Emergency Heat. (Back up heat) . Normally you will find it on heat pumps. It's used manually when the compressor goes out on a heat pump. It's used automatically by the unit when it's so cold outside the heat pump can't keep up. This happens when there is not enough heat in the air to draw heat from. This happens at around 23 degrees. I hope this explains what emergency heat is and what it's used for.

My coleman 13,500 roof a/c year 2000 does not blow as cold as used to. I have cleaned the top condenser coils, with no help. It also at times will seem to pull a heavy load when I assume the compressor...

if the compressor started and stoped means
1 thermostat need settings
2 compressor over heated due to low suction pressure need to check and repair the leak then charge the freon

My colmen central air unit is not working properly. The Outside unit is not working. The problem initally arouse in June, but it "self corrected" after having the A/C unit turned off. Since that...

If nothing is running outside at times you probably have a weak contactor coil that is not pulling the contactor in all the time. If the outside fan comes on but not the compressor, the compressor is over heating and shutting off on overload protection. This could be a dirty condenser coil, low on refrigerant, the compressor it's self. The compressor comes with a 5 yr. warranty.

Coleman rooftop unit ac only.

These units should run in higher ambient conditions within limits. If your unit shuts down with an ambient temperature of 95°F there is a possibility that the system may have a slight over charge of refrigerant in the system or a slight undercharge. This can be easily checked under running conditions by checking the superheat of the gases returning to the compressor. You may also want to check the current draw and the voltage supply during these conditions that are causing the system shut down.
