I just turned on my laptop (hewlett packard) and the screen is so dark I can barely see anything. It is not completely blank - i can only just make out what is meant to be on the screen & it responds to commands so the monitor is otherwise OK - how do i fix this??

Hi,

Take a look at the LCD inverter as this could be the problem.

The LCD inverter is located at the bottom of the screen behind the screen bezel (plastic screen surround) and an elongated circuit board with wires coming from each end.

To get to the inverter you will have to remove the screen bezel to expose it. Take the wires out from each end and take the inverter out.

The inverter should be covered in a frosted plastic cover that may be stuck down at each end. Gently pull the plastic away and remove the cover.

Now, look at the inverter for a copper coil or large semiconductor which will have solder points at each end.
The solder points are the things that you should be taking notice of because they get very hot and can dry as the inverter is the part which supply the backlight power.

If you are good with a soldering iron re-float the solder points around the coil or semiconductor. Wait a second for the solder to set and reconnect the inverter to the screen. Switch the laptop on and you should find the screen will light up again.

This should cost you nothing but time or the expense of a soldering iron, lend one if you can.
If the screen doesn't come on the look for an inverterboard for the laptop from places like eBay.

If you need anymore help on this matter please post back.

Good luck.

With a laptop that becomes completely un-responsive to all keys even the power key, then you last resort is to un-plug the laptop and gently remove the battery. This will power down the machine. Leave the battery out while you are troubleshooting the problem.

Try to go on safe mode (press F8 multiple times when you see the HP screen, at the boot step). Once you are on safe mode, just reboot your computer. See if it fixes it.

My screen is blank when I turn the computer on?

If you have recently connected a second monitor, and have since disconnected the second screen, the primary screen will be completely black. Restart your computer and this should fix it. If it continues, your screen may have over-heated, in which case it needs complete replacement, or it may need to cool down.

If you have an LCD screen, check the power cable connections on the back of your sceen making sure they are connecting properly. If all is connected and you have tried to restart - your screen will need to be replaced.

Blank screen. Remains blank

Power down, remove the battery, remove the power plug. Hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds. Remove and reinstall the memory module(s). Re install the power plug and try to power back up and see if it works. If it does, reinstall the battery ad you're done. If not, get back to me for some more ideas and further diagnosis.
Thanks and have a good day!
