Look at the photos that go with steps 25-32. These show some (though not all) of the internal lens parts. Hopes this helps a little!

Dear GR,

I guess this is more for folks who read your post because I unfortunately cannot help you on this one :-(

Just a note of caution folks, while you CAN order parts for your digital camera from the Part Department at Canon, I highly advise against this unless you are a camera technician or are DEFINITELY capable of repairing your own camera; primarily for three reasons:

1. Modern digital cameras are complex and very miniature devices that require electronics repair skills and appropriate tools to repair.

2. Though you can definitely save money versus sending a camera in for repair, if you are still within your warranty period and you mistakenly damage your camera doing a self repair you can void your warranty.

3. Lastly, though these cameras may "look" easy enough to fix - as in the case of a simple command dial or button - once taken apart it can be a real challenge to put back together again. And unfortunately Canon does not offer any technical support or even instructions with do-it-yourself repairs.

So make sure you KNOW you can handle such a job before you take the DYI plunge. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

E18 for S2 15

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera showing code E18

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.

Try tapping not so gently. other than that it will most likely need to be taken apart and put back together the right way. And any broken parts replaced.

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it without disassembly. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.
