The knob on the right just turns (no clicking) so it does not seem to be selecting a time. now dryer wont start.

Check your timer knob. On these GE dryers I have found a lot of times the knob cracks where the stem of the timer goes in and the resistance of the timer will make ti slip internally rather than turning the knob. If the knob appears to be ok, then I would say you definitely have a bad timer on your hands.
Timer is part number WE4M271 and runs around $100 from marcone's
Knob is
WE1M654 and is around 18$

Good ;uck with this!!

If you're going to purchase parts for your appliance you are going to need to know the correct part number to ensure you get the right part. The part number for a new timer for the model number you provided is 8566184. It can be found on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $55. You can also try the following appliance parts websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

Some of these sites also have helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you in locating the parts you need. Your timer is listed under the "Top and Console Parts" heading as item 21.

To replace, make sure your dryer is unplugged. Remove the back panel of the operator console and the timer knob. Either use a digital camera or write down the correct location of all the wires. They are are color-coded and marked on the timer, but some replacement parts can differ slightly in design. HINT: An easy method is to remove the screw(s) that hold the old timer in place and allow it to hang. Then, swap wires one at a time from the old timer to the new one.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

PS Your model number is actually "WED5820SW0". The last digit is a "zero" vice the letter "O".

DRYER ONLY WORKS BY HOLDING DOWN THE TIMER BUTTON

You need to replace or repair the timer control, this is not a faulty motor control unit.

You find parts by entering model number here.
