Shredder works in reverse but not auto mode. I took apart the shredder and have full access to the switch. When first depressed the motor runs but only for a quick second and then stops (even though the switch is still depressed). You have to turn the unit off and on again (auto mode) to get it to work again but it's only for the one second, not continous. Any ideas?
If you are referring to the paper feed sensor switch in the paper throat it sounds like the pc board or switch itself may be bad. I could troubleshoot a little better if I actually had you on the phone. A Customer Service Rep can help you at 1-800-945-4545.

FELLOWES SHREDDER
In case of a paper jam , which may occur if the shredder is pushed beyond its specified capabilities, press the control switch to the off [O] position and empty the basket if full. Then:
1) Press and hold control switch in reverse [R] position and attempt to back paper out of shredder.
2) If shredder jams in reverse mode, press control switch to automatic [I] position and attempt to continue shredding operation.
3) If shredder jams again, alternate control switch slowly between reverse [R] and automatic [I] positions to attempt to move jammed paper completely through shredder.
If you are unable to clear the jam using this method, turn off and unplug the shredder; remove the wastebasket from cabinet and carefully remove any paper extending below the cutting cylinders; empty the wastebasket; insert wastebasket and repeat jam clearing procedure.

Check the Power
Ensure that the shredder top is firmly placed in the shredder basket if the unit will not operate. If the top is not in place the feeder will not work and accept any paper. Make sure it is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the outlet is active.
Rest the Shredder
Let the shredder cool down if the shredder has been running continuously for a long time. It may have overheated and needs to be left in the off position for at least 30 minutes to reset. Verify the basket is empty or not too full as that will cause the shredder to deactivate.
Clear Paper Jam
Rotate the shredder into "Auto" and reverse to loosen any paper jam that is stopping the gears. Pull out any papers that are sticking out from the shredder feeder. If there is no progress then unplug the shredder and remove the shredder top from the bin. Turn it upside down and use tweezers to free any paper that is blocking the gear.
Auto Mode Not Working
Select the "Auto" option and feed paper into the center of the feeder tray if the shredder is only working in reverse mode. The sensor is located in the middle of the feeder tray and could be blocked by jammed paper. Use an index card to firmly unblock any paper that could be blocking the sensor.

took the shredder section apart, cleaned out the gears of paper and a broken mount (plastic piece), and hand turned the electric motor to free it up. After assembly, the ready light works and so does the FWD/REV directions for shredding.
For me, the problem was the sensor connections. I took the unit apart (7 phillips screws, I'm not sure why I didn't have to remove the 8th.) Then I took the paper sensor unit off (2 more phillips screws.) Then I removed the little black box that both sensor wires are connected to (1 more phillips screw.) Then I pried that box open with a flat head screwdrive. Some parts fell out. I put it all back together and it worked.
If you don't want to mess with it, just remove the two wires and tie them together. The unit will always be on when turned on to Auto, but that's better than not working.
