Had the same problem on my 6month old 3440H, its the degradation of the cheap Asatech Chinese DVD drive that is the source of the problem. . My 3440H HDD to DVD transfer sequentially degraded, It stopped recording DVD+ and -R's then on RW's it sometimes performed and some not.I gave up using cheap DVD's then with higher quality disks it would frequently report task completed but then would not plaback or freeze in the way you describe. I bought the DVDR from the CO-OP Xmas 2006. Co-op no longer support electricals so when it went wrong Co-op gave me a service centre to take it to. Long story short Philips dont recognise the service centre and they declared my warrany void. Tried to re-engage with Philips but they basically were not interested in supporting their product..
Not an elegant fix but since Phillips were useless, I opened the box nothing ....to lose ..I now run it on a bare external Sony DVD drive using extended ribbon and power cables as its a bit tricky to find space in the box to mount the drive.

SOURCE: Philips HDD 1630 won't charge
In some cases, it is possible to save the GoGear when it is displaying the symptoms you describe. IMPORTANT: First, back up all music and other files stored on the device. The process I am about to describe will delete all files from the GoGear. Also, this is not a GUARANTEED solution - it works in many cases, but sometimes the player will need to be replaced ( replacements/repair svcs are not necessarily available from the manufacturer).
1) Connect the GoGear to the computer
2) Open Philips Device Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Philips in Windows XP if no shortcut on desktop)
3) Click on the Repair tab - see if there is a msg that says something like "to repair your player, connect GoGear to computer while holding the volume + button"
4)IMPORTANT: Disconnect the GoGear from the USB cable, turn the GoGear OFF, and then press and hold the volume + button; then, connect your GoGear to PC while still holding the volume + button (VERY IMPORTANT: this process will fix your player, but it will also delete all music and images you have stored on the GoGear) - do not let go of the Volume + button until a pop-up comes up saying that your player is being repaired
In some cases, there is a small anomaly that is preventing the charge from getting to the GoGear. This repair process can save GoGears that were seemingly hopeless. However, this solution is not guaranteed to work every time. Also, to prevent this issue from happening in the future:
a) make sure that you are using a computer with Windows XP
b) this player works best with Windows Media Player 10 (so rollback if you have WMP 11 - or get a newer model GoGear)
c)get the latest firmware upgrade for this device from the Philips website - it has been known to fix some scattered issues with the HDD1630

SOURCE: Problem Recording HDD to DVD-R
I had a few problems with my philips 3450 - I downloaded the latest software upgrade at www.philips.com/support , and my issues were resolved. Worth a shot...
Only other thing I can think of is you may have a faulty batch of DVD-Rs?
Best of luck!

I was having the same problem if I used DVD+R blanks, but the programs would record fine if I used Memorex DVD+RW rewritables. Until today, that is - now it won't let me burn anything from the HDD to a disk! My 3455H is about two years old.
Gotta say I'm quite disappointed with it, and would never consider another Philips product. :(
