NAD C370 Volume

By lawyer - usenet poster

Hi NG,

I bought my NAD C370 last week and I had the chance to test it a few hours
this weekend. I had 4 amps, Marantz, Accuphase, ..., but this amp is the
first one which plays at low volume even if the volume control is in the
lowest position. I was wondering about this strange things, which I never
had with my other amps. Only in mute mode there is no output to the
speakers. Is this typical for NAD amps? Did you notice the same thing with
your C370?
There's no problem with it, but I was just wondering...

Thank you for your infos,
Christian

hey,

As mentioned before i another answer, your problem with the difference in volume comes from the volume control. Normally Nad use cheap alps, and 'brand' these pot meters as a special quality pot meter.
The cheap alps ones 'are okay', but nothing special, they could use all other types of pot meters. I often replace alps cheap pot meters with other cheap ones, or better ones if costumers paid for it.

So maybee you should go find a better pot meter.

You can check out my site, this week i release a small movie about pot meters in nad 3240pe, 7240pe, 3140 and more.
Also available are pdf files including pictures and notes about howto repair

wish you the best, michael

Hey, i think the only solution to this problem is to buy a new better quality pot meter. Don't think NAD 'care', and will repair so many amps. May bee it is a defect shipment of pot meters from the supplier.

Hi all!

My NAD C370 shows the same effect. But I'm not
annoyed by that. But what makes me angry is the
fact that by turning the volume control from the
very low to higher position the left channel comes
first and at a certain volume the right channel
follows. This happens at _very_ low volume but it
is not possible to listen very quite at the same
level on both channels - especially listening to
the CD-Player NAD C521, which plays very loud
itself.

Does anybody have similar problems on a NAD
amplifier or other products?

The NAD service told me this is quite normal.
I can't believe that. What do you propose?
Testing another C370 at my dealer?

Thanks in advance & cheers

Hi
Your problem with the difference in volume probably comes from the
volume control. Its a variable resistor, and probably of lesser
quality. The difference is always heard ofcourse at low volume level.
You can try to connect directly to the poweramp using a soundsource
that has a built in in volume adjustment, some cd players do. You
will notice the difference. I use a volume control kit , consisting
of a rotary switch with different damping setttings for each step.
This gives a much better result and sound quality than the variable
resistors. But you can also try to find better quality variable
resistors for your volume control, only thing is that the ones in
most amplifiers are custom made and hard to replace without some
difficulty.

Hope you solve it.

It's quite normal, and even very expensive amps which use conventional
volume pots do not track well at low volumes. A different sample may
have less variation, but it's not a fault per se, just normal
variation.

* Christian Sulser <hadd @sulser.de>:

I Don't know about the C370, but my 314 Integrated does produce sound
with higher-level sources.  While most sources aren't sufficient, the
512 CD manages to be enough to get some sound out of the amp at the
lowest volumes; this hasn't particularly changed during the life of the
amp, and has never been too much of a hindrance to me.  So, it's hardly
enough to say that ALL NAD amps do this, but now we know of at least
two.

On the other hand, I suppose I would prefer having more gradation for
volume levels, and not maxing out at about 1/3 turn.  :)

Hi Christian,

My NAD 370 does the same. The output is _very_ low when the volume is
turned right down, but it _is_ there. I can only assume it's normal
for this amp. I'm personally not worried about it.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

My C320 does the opposite: pressing the MUTE on de RC, yields in a
very low, but audible soundlevel.
Under normal condition (mute off), turning the volume pot CCW,
results in no sound at all.
