Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

My harddrive (WD 1TB essential) does not become recognized at all when I put it into my laptop which is running windows 7. I have checked the cables and the power supply and they are good. I tried to put it into my old computer as well (Win XP pro) and the same problem happens. It does not recognize it.. Any solutions?

In fact. It does not show any messages at all. It seems like it is not plugged at all.

Yes please try changing the cable and see if it will work and if it doesnt then there is a fault with your hard drive.

what can I do if there is nothing wrong with the cables? - the hdd worked nicely for less than 12 hours ago and I have not damaged it in that time.

that mean when you last removing the cable from the computer you did not use the safely remove drive hence you hdd has been damage. But most of all did you try another cable ? If yes then i suggest you take it to the tech department for them to service it for you.

I did use the safety remove application. I guess it will go to the tech department. Thx for your pieces of advice. :)

I'm having the same problem for the second time this year. I was very careful to "safely remove drive" etc. WD says to re-format! I asked about all my data and they said it's gone! I used a free damaged partition utility successfully the first time. This time - no luck. I'm more than a bit angry at WD and that they sell this as a back-up storage system. Don't rely on this drive for anything!

WD Software will not load up, and Windows keeps giving me an I/O error. With the I/O error, I am not able to see or access any files that I have on my WD MyPassport 1TB, SN WXD0AA9W6561

Have you tried another USB port.Try not using a USB hub and plug it into a different port on your PC. Also try temporarily disabling your virus and anti-spyware program. My virus program Antivir always blocks my WD software. There may have been an update that now blocks it. Check all your cables and plugs on the WD drive and if still not working try starting your pc in safe mode and see if the WD drive is recognized. Hope this was some help, Thanks for using FixYa

Hi there,

Did he try to recycle the files using the iMac? because sometimes if you recycle the files it will show that it was deleted from the harddrive but in reality they will remain there but the are hidden. I think the best way to check if the drive is full is to plug this drive to a computer that has a Windows operating system and make sure to show hidden files and delete all hidden folders that you will see in the drive to free the space completely.

Hope you find this helpful!

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Windows 7 is not recognizing and comes up as a cd drive?

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
If your harddrive still not recognized then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

External Harddrive locks up Windows Vista Home Basic on start up

I would suggest two things.
First, plug in the 1TB drive when it won't cause problems, and go to Disk Management under Administrative Tools (for example right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage, then drill down to Disk Management). Check your 1TB disk's drive letter there, and perhaps change it to some letter further down the alphabet, like "T" for example.
Then run a full check on the drive - right-click the 1TB drive and select Properties, go to Tools tab and run "check for errors", selecting the option to repair system errors.
After that's finished, plug in the 500GB drive and run a full check on it as well, just to make sure.
Now try booting up with both disks plugged in - the problem should be gone.
If it's not, then it may mean, that your BIOS is trying to open this 1TB drive to make an option to boot from it possible, and it has troubles because of it's size; some older BIOSes can't cope with disks of that size. Should this be the case, you can go into BIOS Setup and disable booting from other devices that the primary internal hard disk.
