Question about Compaq Evo Notebook N160 PC Notebook

My Laptop has stopped working. As soon as I turn it on, it boots up to the options screen. I've tried all of them, but as soon as it passes the windows logo it crashes. What do I do?

Hey, Sounds like something nasty has happened. But it is a great sign that it gets to the windows logo, that means it is not a hardware problem. What you need is the installation disk, place it in...press which ever key is the boot up (it may be hidden and you may have to go into the setup to unhide it) when computer first starts (which is before the screen you see). Then boot from disk. Once here, try to repair your windows...but if that fails, you may have to just reinstall it :(

Turn off the computer. Hold the Fn key and power key to boot the computer in diagnostic mode. Follow the onscreen instructions to see if you have any hardware issues. This sounds like bad sectors on the OS boot partition.

I have a Ntdetect Failed promt on toshiba p15-s479 laptop

LOL, sounds like you've got it trying to reboot from a Network or Lan first. Go back into the Bios and change the boot sequence to make the CD Drive your first boot option and the Hard Drive your second boot option.

You will want to boot from the CD to get the operating system installed. After it is installed be sure to remove the cd otherwise it will try to boot from it. Best option would be to go back into the bios and make the hard drive your first boot option after you get everything loaded.

You might be able to direct the system to boot from the cd as soon as you press the power button. Most systems will post an option to hit a certain key to get into the Bios or System Setup and a key to change the Boot order just for this one time.

BATTERY LIGHT ORANGE-LAPTOP TURNS ON AND VAIO LOGO COMES UP BUT THEN SCREEN GOES BLACK AND WHITE CURSOR FLASHES ON TOP LEFT OF SCREEN

It could possibly mean a faulty hard drive. But before we conclude, try to boot to safemode through advanced boot options. How to get there? tap on F8 as soon as your computer turns on. If you get the advanced boot option, then good. Try to choose the option that says Last known good configuration first. If it does not work, try it again but this time choose safemode. If all else fails then you might need to do a full re-installation of the operating system. If still trying to do a re-installation does not detect the hard drive, then you will need to have it replaced.

I want to boot my pc to the safe mood but i cant i've used f8, f10, and dont know wat to do now.

In order to get into Windows safe mode, you need to begin pressing the F8 key repeatedly AS SOON as you see the BIOS/manufacturer name come up, WELL before you see the Windows splash screen. Basically as soon as it goes to 'black screen', begin hitting the F8 key and while it may take a couple of times, you should get there!
Best of luck! Hope this helps!

When the laptop is turned on, it only gets to the logo page which says In touch with tomorrow: toshiba. It does not boot at all, and only gives the options of hitting f2 or f12 for booting options, neither...

The problem is not with the battery or the AC power supply
( I assume you tried pressing F8 safe mode before the loading screen appeared?)

Get into the Bios by pressing ( I think its F2 or F10) as soon as the laptop starts up (before loading screen).
Check in the main page, that the laptop "sees" the hard drive. If it does not, then the hard drive has failed. (you can check this by substituting another drive and seeing if the laptop recognizes this in the Bios).
See also that the DVD rom is recognised
In the Boot order screen, check that the boot order is set to 1st boot DVD/CD drive and the 2nd is set to hard drive.

Using a windows install disc, boot to CD and see if windows wants to install (if the hard drive is recognised in the Bios but has an internal fault, Windows will tell you before it installs the OS)

If the drive IS recognised and windows installs ok, let it go to the 2nd repair option, where it looks for previous installations of windows and let it repair the system (your files will not be wiped)

If Windows reports that there is no HDD, then you should try a spare HDD and see if it will format and install .

At best, it sounds like the MBR has been corrupted, in which case the over the top install above should fix it, at worst, the hard drive has failed and will need replacing

My laptop won't boot up properly. It gets to the screen with the dell logo and the loading bar but the bar only fills about 3/4 of the way. It also begins beeping as soon as I turn it on. I tried to push...

Your RAM may be bad the beep is a bios checksum error letting u know that the CPU or RAM did not pass its test. It will not allow you to to get past the preboot test until it passes all its test. Replace the ram and u should be ok again.

HP DV4 displays only a blue screen running vista

Shutdown the computer,disconnect external peripherials.
Turn on the computer and hit F8 key as soon as you restart the computer
You will get the windows advance options menu.
Select the Safe mode option and hit enter.
If the computer boots in safe mode, do a system restore to previous date.
If computer restore then issue is resolved.
If still unable to boot in safe mode.
Ran a harddrive diagnostic. If harddrive test passes. If harddrive test fails replace harddrive.
Boot the system using the windows xp or vista operating system disk. Try to repair the OS then reboot the system and check.
If still unable to boot possible issue with corrupt operating system.
Reinstall Operating system. / Recover System . Good Luck.

Dell 1200 Inspiron OS boot problem

Two things you should try to resolve this issue: -

  • Check that the FN button on the keyboard to switch from the Laptop monitor to external monitor has not been enabled - these are usually 3 state switches (Laptop screen ON, External screen ON, Both ON) it is really easy to accidentally hit this without realizing.
  • If this works there is no need to try the second option.
OR
  • Try booting to safe mode - as the laptop boots up and you see the Bios summary screen depress the F8 button and you should receive a screen containing several options.
  • Select the option to Boot to safe mode.
  • If the laptop boots up ok then login to XP, don't be alarmed at the change in screen resolution.
  • Right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Properties - Hardware - Device manager
  • In the tree-view containing the different hardware select Display Adapters you should see your graphics card in there
  • Right-click and select Scan for Hardware Changes if it is ok the close and reboot as normal
  • If there is a problem here it implies the driver is somehow corrupted and may need re-installing from the disk that came with the laptop.
