RCA RS2005 reset problem

I turned on my shelf system today to listen to a cd and it tried to read and then posted....reset. How do I do this? I read a troubleshooting tip from a different model's manual(lost mine) and it told me to push the of/on button for min. of 10 seconds. still nothing. Can you help?

SOURCE: CD player won't play

Sounds like the reader (laser eye) is dirty. The reason why it says "read" is beacuse it is looking for a disc to play, it's not actually reading the disc, more like searching for data to read. Even if you have all five discs in it still won't play. It's like looking through a dirty windsheild, nowing that there is a road there but you can't see it. This is a very common problem and is easy to fix. Go to your local Walmart, or electronics store and purchase yourself a cleaning CD. It will look like a regular CD but with small brushes on one side and might come with some cleaning solution too. Shouldn't cost more than $20.

SOURCE: CD Player shelf will not open.

the door could be stuck or the cd laser mech. is stuck or the power circut for the motor that opens the door or the motor has become weak or ect..... there are many posibilitys but you need to listen for the motor sound or a click when you hit the button , if you do hear it then its stuck or the motor is to weak and needs to be replaced , or the circut isn't giving enough power to the motor

SOURCE: Device: RCA RS1249 Shelf System I've

That is caused by the lens or the laser head: dust has settled on it and it's blocking the reflection of the laser to the sensor = no signal is detected so the player thinks that no disk is there.
Because this has happened so long time ago and nothing has been done to clean it i doubt the dust can still be cleaned - by now it has been probably baked in the plastic of the lens.
All you can still try to do now is to try a manual cleaning: dismantle the unit completely (take out the sides, take out the rear, lift the top and remove the transversal bar) and access the reading head - clean the lens with a can of compressed air from all parts and then wipe its face with a q-tip.

Hi Joespivey,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.

1.Clean the lens. - because of dust build-up, the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
2.Replace the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.
Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

Our cd changer will not open. just shows the word "error"

It could be that the CD inside has become stuck somehow. First, try unplugging the system completely for a few minutes, then plugging back in again. See if that "resets" the system. Also, on some of these shelf systems, the CD has a small hole for manual ejection. You'd need to unfold a paperclip and then insert it. I'm not sure if your unit has one, but it's worth checking. Definitely check the manual's troubleshooting section to see if there are any suggestions. If you don't have one, you might be able to download one off the Internet.

As a very last resort, you could try turning off the unit and then shaking the main unit (detach the speakers), in hopes of knocking the CD back into position... but that's a LAST restort, because there is a possibility it could make matters worse. Good luck.
