your thumb drive dosnt have suficant power to keep the ps3 online. i suggest getting a land line if you wanting to play online. thumb drives just arent sufficant enougant to give out that much internet to a ps3. even witha router
you may just need to redo the internet connection settings cause ps3 hold that info. Like if you got a new router or changed service providers the ps3 will still have the info from the old router. just got through settings -->network settings and reconnect to your router and see if that fixes.
most of the time even if you havent replaced a router or changed a service provider this is caused by a change in dns. your provider may have done it and that will cause wep to time out. and some games work online.
1-turn off game console..............2-disconnect router for 20 seconds then reconnect............3-turn on game console..............4-go to setting click on network setting.................5-go to internet connection and press X and disable the connection wait 10 seconds and renable the connection and cod4 should work fine on line.............................

How are you hooked up to your Internet ? is it Via a WiFi Router ? if so, ensure that the router is compatible with the Playstation 3. Also, have you tried calling your internet service provider ? they are usually able to solve connection problems with regards to game consoles etc.
gucciskills, this is a common problem if you have other people using your home internet connection at the same time. I have that problem every now and then even with no one on the home PC. It just means you are losing your connection. Try and reconfigure your router setting and see if that helps.
