Question about Husqvarna , No.455 Rancher, 20" Gas - Powered Chainsaw

1 Answer

Reference the Husqvarna 350 chainsaw. Why does the chain continue to turn at idle? I just installed a new clutch. Adjusting the idle down causes the saw to shut off upon trying to accelerate.

Sounds like the clutch is still grabing. Easy solution is to apply the chain brake at idle to stop the chain turning. Try adjusting the L screw for a smoother idle.

Did you ever get it running smoother. I'm in the neighborhood and I have the same issue with my 235 Husky. The L or H screw is not a screw on my model but a post. How the heck can I change these? I have a dime bar on my saw and I've never been able to get the chain to quit moving without it dying on me. The Tscrew is a joke.

Just changed the ring and now can't stop the chain from moving, Is there anything to check besides the carburator?

For the 455 Rancher.

First check the idle speed. It should be 2700 rpm. Clutch engages at around 3800 rpm. If the clutch is engaging below the 3800 then clutch springs need checking and replacing if needed.

If you can't get the idle speed down check for air leaks.

After you install bar, chain, and brake cover(tightened)the chain wont turn.

Tighten the adjusting screw with the two nuts loose but snugon the middle of the chain on the top of the bar. Tighten the chain screw until the chain is loose enough to raise the chain up about 1/2 inch then tighten the mounting nuts tight. Then see if it is ok.

What causes the Clutch drum gear that drive the chain to go bad ? my chain eats a groove all the way through it aftr about 12 hrs of cutting I have replaced it 3 times now.

The chain you should be using should be a .325 pitch and not a 3/8.

Never over tighten the chain, it will wear and stretch with time, which is why you should regularly check the chain tension. To get it right you should be able to lift 2 drive links clear of the bar. The chain will naturally wear groves into the spur sprocket, there is no conversion to a rim spricket for this model. Rim sprockets allow the chain to move along the sprocket easier and takes the wear away form the clutch drum.

When idling chain keeps turning

if this is happening, then your chainsaw is just idling to fast, you need to turn down the idle speed a little. on the carby, there are 3 screws, 2 small (H), (L), and a larger screw is the idle speed one, turn anti - clockwise to reduce idle speed.
Hope this helps.

Trouble putting clutch cover back on the 350 model husqvarna

Make sure you have the chain brake lever pulled back, if it is in the forward position you will not be able to install the clutch cover.

Husqvarna 359: Has run fine for 3 years. Now when first starting idles fine but as soon as it warms up idle speed increases enough to continually engage the clutch. Carb. setting have never been changed...

I think an air leak and she is running lean. Maybe time for some pressure/vacuum testing. Continuing to tweak the carburetor may camouflage a larger problem until the saw fails.

Chain continues to turn when in the idle position.I checked the manual and done what it said and no change, any ideas?the saw is a pcn4040 16inch

Most of the time, when the chain does not stop it is because because it is to tight.
Loosen the chain, there should be just a little play on the bar. Hope this helps.

How do you adjust the chain tension on a husqvarna 350 chainsaw ?

I don't own a 360, but most saws you have to loosen the two nuts that hold the bar on, and adjust the adjusting screw that points toward the front of the saw while holding up on the tip of the bar. Tighten until the chain is snug, but still loose enough to be able to spin the chain on the bar.

Husqvarna 350, the chain continues to free spin after trigger is released.

Is the chain loose?
ee42fee.gif Chain adjustment
  1. Make sure the chain brake is off (gloves will protest your fingers).
  2. If necessary, loosen the bar nuts that are clamping the clutch cover in place (or whatever holds the clutch cover and bar on). They don't need these really loose - finger tight will do.
  3. Ease the tension adjustment until the chain is obviously loose.
  4. Using one hand, hold the nose of the bar up.
  5. While holding the nose up, adjust the tensioner so that the center of the chain just touches the underside of the bar, add a touch more.
  6. Continue holding the nose of the bar up & tighten up the bar nuts / bolts / quick-release system. HTH
