If there is no beep codes or the 4 LED's in the back aren't lighting it could be a plethora of possibilities. Anything from the power supply going bad to the bios. You'll need to have someone take a look at it.

Usually faulty ram chip / chips. Check that they are making good connection first.

We have around 30 units of DELL Optiplex GX280 having mother board failure. It was more then 3 years old already. Once the turbo fan become noisy then it will gone dead.

May be serious. See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans sound like 747 taking off. Power light goes and stays amber. This is USUALLY caused by bad capacitors on the mother board. Known GX280 problem going back. If you look on the motherboard, the capacitors should have flat tops and not leaking. If the are rounded or leaking, the MB has probably gone bad.

I obviously can not be 100% sure about this as the unit is not here.

You can google "gx280 solid amber light loud fan" and see the issues. Here is one such link.

I have a dell optiplex gx280 which seems to have a racing fan problem. sounds pretty loud, and varies. any ideas?

The fan bearings may be going bad. Variable speeds are normal as the fan adjusts to the cooling requirements.

Optiplex gx280 won't boot and cpu fan goes faster

Sounds like a bad motherboard, I try resetting the bios , removing everything but the video , could be a bad power supply too (if you have one jump the wires in there as a test). you can buy those dell MBs cheap on fleabay.

Dell Optiplex GX280 - On power ON , no Fan movement no display

Confirm no leaking or bulging capacitors on your mothboard.
refer to here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

As this was a common problem with the GX280.
If found, you will need to replace the capacitors.

The other check is to make sure the heatsink is fitted correctly, perhaps reaply the thermal paste if you have any. I know that high temps would switch the GX280 off.

Same problem... orange power light, fan starts slow and builds up to very high speed.
I removed my video card and SIMMs --> it beeped on boot and the fan did not speed up.
Put one SIMM back in --> booted fine, pressed F2 to view BIOS. Memory reported fine.
Put all SIMMs back in --> all fine now.

Dell Optiplex GX280 won't start. Fan sounds like a Boeing 757

If the processor is ok, you can just change the motherboard. Then look for a compatible motherboard that can accept your processor.

Dell Optiplex gx280 shuts down and orange power light blinks

It happens because the power supply is overheats and computer goes to standby. The power supply is 160w or lower. Specially it will happen if you put more devices in such as video card or sound card. So the only solution you have is to place a small 1or2 fans toward the power supply to make it cooler. And 1 more thing the power for the fans should come from other sources.
