I had a similar problem and I found it to be something I would have never checked. It was a ceramic capacitor in the high voltage section. Make sure to check all them in this section. I know they are least likely to fail but they do go bad.

    how do you check them?

If you have a Fluke digital multi meter it should have the symbol for a capacitor. After you put the meter on this setting look at the capacitor rateing in farads and see is it in range with the farad reading that meter is giving. Of course you have to place one of the test leads on one leg of the capacitor and the other lead on the other leg before you can get a reading. If the cap reads short or below the rated farads recorded on the cap take one end of the cap out of the circuit board. If it still reads a dead short or below the rated value replace it. You can also by a capacitance meter that is just for capacitors online. As far as parts are concerned you can look up an electronic parts maker such as Mouser Electronics or MAP these companies will send you a cross refrence manual or you can use their on line manual. After you cross refrence it you can order the part online or call and order. Parts will be sent directly to your house or place of business

does the power need to be hooked up? or can you do this without a power flow?

Akai PT5499hd that has suddenly lost color alignment

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

You can see some more examples and find a fix herebb0cf99.png http://www.fixya.com/support/r2861467-solution_video_looking_whiteish_dull

Input cable piece broke off akai pt5499hd

The coaxial input can be soldered back in. You will need a new one however. Sometimes the internals in the tuner (where coaxial goes) may be damaged when coaxial connection breaks out. If that is the case a tech may charge more money. But just to replace the connection should be relatively inexpensive.

There is a loud hum on my 32" AKAI LCD TV on all channels.

The humming noise is cause by defective capacitors in the power supply 12 volts line. These capacitors become defective due to the amount of heat surrounding them.
I repair these power supplies. If you need further assistance, write to jah2mil@hotmail.com

Akai pt5499hd just shut down

If you are electrically inclined, there is a power deflector board that may need to be replaced. This deals with the high voltage part of the TV, so I am not responsible. The part number we had to but and replace was BP94-01289A or about $130.
