I am really just trying to figure out how to physically slide out the old one. I found a lever at the top which disengages the two top pins, but I can't remove the old PS

Power supplies are pretty easy to replace.

I would recommend taking a picture of the inside of the computer case so you have a reference. The connectors are all oriented so you cannot misplug.

I assume you have the right PS for your unit.

Power supplies are removed from the inside. I looked at the pictures of the Sony instructions on replacing the disk. It appears you might have to remove the disk cage

This power supply is unusual and very large. I doubt if Sony will help but you might try emailing or calling the source of your power supply.,... has the PS for you unit.

Just lift the latch, and remove the three screws which fix a bracket over the PS along the back edge of PS, then the PS can be slide put easily.

System keeps rebooting

Hello Akinajoey, hi, the problem is either hard ware or software, for the software, have your pc scanned by an antimalware or antivirus software.if this does not help, the next BIG step is reformat the drive and re-setup the windows OS. for the hardware, try replacing the power supply box, if this does not help, the next BIG step is replacement of the motherboard.

From the vicinity of Power supply there is a taping noise and system stops. WIN/XP says it can't read Hard Drive. Is this typical of the Power Supply?

The noise is either the fan on the power supply or the heads on the harddrive...disconnect the hard drive and boot into the bios....still a noise? then could be your power supply starting to fail (not giving enough power to the harddrive) if no noise then could be the harddrive failing..try running chkdisc

Recover a Sony VGC-RA710G computer

Unfortunately there is no way that you'll be able to test those recovery CD's without having to use them. Keep in mind that those discs only cover software and do not backup your documents. I recommend an external hard drive to do so. However in terms of Microsoft Office, if you have Vista you may a problem getting it reinstalled because Microsoft has introduced new DRM technologies to prevent theft. Have you used all 3 of your licenses?
The great thing is that in the worst case scenario you merely have to be on the phone with Microsoft for 10-15 minutes getting a new activation code.

HELP! No video on Sony Vaio VGC-RA710G desktop

Since the power supply wasn't secured properly it actually contacted the motherboard while it was still carrying a charge. For next time, I use zap straps for all of my wires and to secure components. Try removing the motherboard and doing the power supply self test, most likely you will have to replace both the motherboard and CPU though.
