Hello pfitzgerald2!
First of all you have to make sure that you have the Hp solution Center installed on your computer, HP Solution Center is part of a standard installation of the Full Feature product software (Installation Disc)
To check if you have the Hp solution center just go to the Start Menu on your computer, go to All Programs and then click the Hp folder.
If HP Solution Center is in the list of HP programs, you are ready to begin
Step one: Load the item to scanYou can scan from the scanner glass or from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) tray, if your product has one.

  1. Make sure that the product is connected to the computer.
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Load the picture or document:
    • Scanner glass : Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.
    • ADF : Place the item into the document feeder tray. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item.
Step two: Scan the item
1.Open HP Solution Center
2.Use one of the following methods to start the scan: For photos or artwork: Click the on-screen Scan Picture "button" in HP Solution Center. For a text document with or without graphics: Click the on-screen Scan Document "button" in HP Solution Center.
A "Scanning from..." screen displays to prompt for scan settings.
3.On the "Scanning from..." screen, click the appropriate option under "Scan Shortcuts" on the left. Each shortcut has a default group of settings that display when you click it.
4.Click Change Settings , and then read through the drop-down menu choices for all of the settings for the shortcut, adjusting any settings as necessary. Also click theAdvanced Picture Settings button and the Save to file Save Options button to view your choices and make any changes.
5.Click Scan
6. After the scan completes, it goes to the destination that you specified in the settings (My documents in your case)
If you dont have the Hp solution Center you will need to reinstall the printer using the installation disc or download the software from www.hp.com

How do I name and save a scanned document in HP C4480 (Windows)?

Hello, Robert -

I hope I am correct in assuming you have the user's manual for the HP Photosmart C4480. Just in case you do not, this is the link to the web page where you can download and save the manual (PDF format - Adobe Acrobat Reader software needed, free):
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-photosmart-c4400-all-in-one-printer-series/3655558/model/3655559/manuals

After downloading the PDF document save it (Save As) to your Documents folder and give it a name you can find again easily - maybe: HP Photosmart C4480 Manual.

How to save a PDF file:
- With your computer, open the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Move cursor to upper left corner of page and left click or tap on FILE
- In drop down File menu, move cursor to SAVE AS and left click or tap on it
- In Save As window which opens, move cursor down to CHOOSE A DIFFERENT FOLDER and left click on tap on that "button"
- In window which opens choose DOCUMENTS in the Documents Library
- In File name box near the bottom of the Documents Library pop-up window, enter the name with which you want to save the PDF document, Example: HP Photosmart C4480 Manual
- Left click or tap on the SAVE button

Note: The steps above will be similar to what you will need to do after scanning any document.

The instructions for scanning start in Chapter 10, Page 64 (Image 304 of the PDF format manual).

Open the scanner through your computer. It is easier to save the document later by operating the scan functions through your computer.

With the scan application open on your computer run the scan process. After scanning the document, you will need to save it. First, you will need to determine the format in which you want to save the scanned document: PDF, JPEG (photo image), GIF, etc.

After choosing the format for the scanned document, in the proper file name box, enter the name for the document you wish to save.
Examples:
Correspondence 2018-Feb-18 Brother
Photo Brothers-Family 2018-Feb-18
Deed of Sale 2018-Feb-18 House

Get the idea? I like to give a date to my scanned document names to help identify them better.

Once you have entered the file name, click or tap on the SAVE button.

Note: I always like to open the saved document from the Documents folder to verify it was saved. Plus, my scanner attaches a number at the end of every file name. After closing out the saved document and closing the scanner winder, I go back and Edit the file name, removing the added number (digits) from the saved file name.

The video you will find with this link:
http://esvideo.es/video/watch/ult2ORqN1eGRiLQ=
is for those who use Windows 8 or 10. Even if you use another Windows operating system (I use Windows 7), you can probably figure out what to do. The video goes through the scanning and saving process step-by-step.

Best wishes.

I want to scan to my documents and the scan only scans to photo essentials. What do I do?

Hi,

How are you scanning it ? From HP Solutions Center or HP Director ?

Try this step.

Open HP Director or HP Solution Center.

Under Settings you will find Pictures/Document Scan
Below you will find option like File Type : Choose JPEG or PDF

Save it.

IF this does not work, the best option for you is to uninstall HP Photosmart Essentials from Add/Remove programs ( or Control panel - Programs and Features )

But however, by default the pictures/documents are still saved in MY Documents - My Scans folder even if the Photosmart essential pop-up after you scan

Regards,
Ron
