What do you mean by blowing oil?Do you mean when you run it,oil splatters everywhere, like on your legs and everywhere? Is it localized to one spot or all around?

it seems to have blowby mainly around the oil fill tube

  • Greg McCarthy Aug 05, 2010

So basically at the base of the fill tube? There may be a seal there,at least you would think there would be if it is not welded.I have found .I need your mower model # please to check out the parts breakdown and see what I can find.Thanks.

the model # is12av566n711 its a briggs and it also blows oil out the fill cap i notice but it dont smoke at all out the exhaust its a 6.75 horse

Lol,no wonder I couldn't find anything on troybilt,it's a briggs.I couldn't get to the necessary information with the model number you provided(I have no idea why).Something isn't right.I am providing you a link to briggs to show you what they are looking for.You can either look around at the pictures if you want,or you can send me the information and I will look.It is actually a site with a FREE download of diagrams, schematics etc.which is pretty rare stuff considering all the things I have tried to find.I would like to see what is in there though.Reply when you can.I will check it out probably tomorrow. Thanks Greg

17.5 briggs on troybuilt riding mower blows black liquid out muffler on startup.

the black liquid is most likely oil and the smoke indicates the rings are bad or a valve is sticking allowing oil into the cylinder.
you are most likely looking at an engine rebuild

Honda gx620 on golf cart occasionally bogs down & blows enormous cloud of white smoke from exhaust.gas getting in oil also.runs great until this happens

What ussually causes white smoke to come out the exhaust is oil being sucked up in carb. Typical causes are too much oil in crank case or PVC valve. Or really bad piston rings

Overfill oil

Sounds like the engine is tired. Blue smoke is oil burning. Hard starting is oil on the spark plugs and/or low compression. This also can be due to someone adding too much oil.
Sometimes, the carburetor Needle valve hangs u pa bit and the Crank case oil gets mixed with gas so now the oil level is high. Too much oil in a motor is bad too, that would cause theblue smoke too.

White smoke from the exhaust (not a gas smell), burns oil (compression test 120 on one side and the other 60)

the smoke my not smell like gas but check the oil it might the needle valves don't seat in the carb and the gas drains into the crank case and the oil being thinned out by gas can make it smoke nest to check is a blown head gasket they blow out between the cylinder and the lifter port and **** oil into the cylinder its about a $25 part no fancy tools needed just do the one with the low compression

Yes,but do not drain it all off.It sounds like there may be too much oil in it.Drain some of the oil and start it again to see if that fixes the smoke.30 wt oil is ok to use in your mower.

Continues blowing out white smoke after I start the lawn mower

Hik marie carten...
Normally white smoke coming out of the exaust will me one of two things.
You have overfilled the crankcase with too much oil and it is making the smoke, in which case you can drain the excess oil out and that should elimanate the white smoke.
Or, you have a worn out engine and oil is getting by the rings of the piston and being burnt in the combustion chamber of the engine.Which means engine overhaul, or buy a new mower.

I am blowing oil out of the vent from the valve cover on a 70's 6040. Any answers to this problem?

This is called blow-by. Start with compression test to find out is rings are ok. Need more information like gas diesel, model number of engine. So here is a general run down. Compression is getting into crank case. Several things can cause this. Possible causes are bad valve guides, rings, head gasket valve stem seals. Compression test will tell if low cylinder. If this is ok for your year model look to valve stem seals. If two cylinders next to each other low. Possible head gasket leak. Use compressed air 60-90 psi and listen were air is going. If blowing into crank case or intake exhaust manifolds. If crank case rings if not valves. I am going to assume your engine is burning oil or using more then normal. Possible white smoke from exhaust. If this is the case and compression is good valve stem seals should fix it. Hope this helps. Remember when compressing cylinders have both valves closed on top dead cylinder.

Puchased a rover quick start 6 months ago. No revs

Black smoke should not be coming from your air filter. If however, the smoke is coming from your exhaust this could be the result of dirt clogging your air filter and starving the engine of air, hence causing the motor to run on a rich fuel/air mix. If this is the case clean or replace the air filter element, and keep it clean. Another reason for black smoke blowing out is dirty oil in the crank case, if the oil is very dark brown to black in color or smells burnt then it needs replacing.
