More than likely your Folding Umbrella Lateral Assembly is damaged. There are 10 laterals that have like screens on them. If they break, then sand can come out. Also if you have had it apart, the center support they screw into could be bad. IF you change sand, put some water in first so when you add sand you don't break the laterals. Also if your ph gets too low you can actually be dissolving sand. You can download a manual for your filter at

Leaks sand

you might have a broken lateral (takes the clean water to pool) that sucks sand in and pumps back into the pool. Also if you either just replaced sand, or disturbed it by backwash or something similar it could be a temporary problem sending out some sand temporary until it settles

Sand is leaking from filter into pool, lots of sand in bottom of pool, also back wash or waste port is leaking, there is no pressure

Sorry to say it, but it sounds like you have broken laterals at the bottom of your filter. The are the "spokes" with the slits in them that are attached to the hub in the center. The only way sand can get to the pool is if these laterals are broken. The sand is getting past the laterals and has gotten into your backwash valve keeping it from sealing properly.

Why is sand shooting back into pool

Inside the sand filter there are laterals that are PVC pipes with many narrow slots along their length. If a lateral is broken then sand will not be stopped by the lateral. Another possibility is that the part these laterals screw into is broken and sand leaks through. I hope this helps.

Sand Leaking From Filter into Pool. When my filter is running I am experiencing sand in the bottom of my pool from the filter. What can be causing that?

There is only one thing that can cause sand to come back into the pool from a sand filter. The internal assembly, called the lateral assembly, is either cracked or broken. This is an easy fix and should cost you around $70 to replace the whole thing. You need to unscrew the bottom drain cap on the filter to remove the water in the tank. Then, remove the multiport valve on top of the filter. Take a shop vac and remove the sand in the filter. If the sand hasn't been replaced in the last 3-5 years, this would be a great time to do that since you already have the sand out anyway. Then, remove the lateral assembly and inspect the entire thing. After you replace the lateral assembly, you'll need to fill the sand filter tank 1/2 full of water before adding fresh sand. This is done to cushion the laterals from the weight of the sand. Cover the hole in the top of the lateral assembly pipe with a cup or duct tape to prevent any sand from getting inside the pipe (the sand will come out into the pool if it gets into the pipe). Fill the tank 3/4 full of pool filter sand. Make sure it is genuine silica pool filter sand from a pool company. A lot of big box and home improvement stores sell play sand as filter sand. This will cause you more problems!

I dont kno how to operate to open the pool. Please help

You can go to the Hayward web site and download the manual and parts list. They also will trouble shoot basic issues over the phone. Here is the manual website:
Here is the main page for help. You will need to register to get a live person.
Air leaks are the enemy here. Check all unions and valves. Also, if you are handy you can replace the impeller and seal on the motor. If you are getting sand blown into the pool, you will need to remove the sand and inspect the fingers inside the tank. Replace sand carefully so as to not damage fingers. If the pump will not stay primed, recheck for air leaks. That should be enough to get you started. Download everything and study it, then call tech support after you have tried the basics. Good Luck!

Sand leaks into pool. I took apart the vari-flo control valve and found that the rubber that fills the top of the dividers in the piece that has 6 sections in it has eroded and come out. Could this be why...

Thank you for posting your question here on

You need to empty the sand out and replace the lateral assembly too. It attached to the bottom of the valve and has several 'fingers' embedded in the sand. Once it wears enough, the sand can get thru it. Replace the sand if it is over 3 years old while you are at it. A wet/dry vacuum works well for removing the sand.

Sand is in pool after backwash

A little sand is normal, called a puff back. Anything more then a good pinch of sand is a problem If its a lot of sand you can check the following.
1. O-ring in side the filter valve when standpipe inserts is intact. Make sure that standpipe is not cracked and seats well into valve.
2. check spyder gasket inside filter head. (looks like a wagon wheel) if it is loose or is pulling up it will need to replaced or re-siliconed. A good indication of this being the problem is if water is leaking from backwash port.
3. Check hoses to make sure that the to pool, to pump conections have not been reversed, if this was case you would get a lotta sand into pool. (can empty tank)
