The computer does not reconize the camcorder
The first step you have to take to connect your camera to your computer is to ensure that you have installed the software that came with your camera on your computer. You should insert the CD into your computer's drive and the installation screen should load automatically. If it doesn't, you should open the drive's icon that the CD is in, then double click PICTURE PACKAGE. When the menu opens up you should then choose INSTALL. It should install the First Step Guide. Once the install is finished, and you click the NEXT arrow, you should be shown a screen that will allow you to install the ImageMixer VCD2. When that is complete the software might ask you if you want to install the Microsoft Direct X software. This may not show up if you already have that software installed. Chances are if anyone plays any games on your computer that software will already be installed. If not you can click the Install button for the Direct X package. If the system finds a newer version already installed it will display a message to that effect. If not, then it will install their version.
After all of the programs are installed a window will come up asking you to restart your computer. Go ahead and do so. Once your desktop is loaded back up, you should see icons on the desktop for Picture Package Menu and Picture Package Destination folder, as well as an icon for the First Step Guide. Now you should be able to connect your camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable. If you make the connection, and the computer does not recognize the camera do the following:
1) Disconnect and re-connect the cable at both the camera and computer end.
2) Disconnect all other USB devices from your computer, but leave your keyboard and mouse connected. Reboot the computer and once the desktop is loaded try and connect the camera again.
3) If you have more than one USB connection free on the computer try and use all of the other connections until one works.
If none of the above steps work then you will have to try and re-install your USB drivers from the supplied CD. To do so you will have to first delete the drivers that exist. Follow these steps carefully to do so:
1) Make sure your camera is connected to your computer.
2) Right Click My Computer and choose Properties.
2) When the System Properties window appears choose the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button, then choose the View menu and make sure Devices by type has a black dot beside it.
3) Find the following devices in the folder names beside them. You will right click them and choose Uninstall. This will delete them from your computer. The devices are
A) USB Composite Device in the Universal Serial Bus Controller folder.
B) USB Audio Device in the Sound, video, and game controller folder.
C) USB Device in the Other devices folder.
The system will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall those items. Confirm them. Once they have all been uninstalled follow the steps given in the first part of this answer to install all of the necessary programs that came on the CD with your camera.
If you are still having problems getting the computer to recognize your camera after all of this then there maybe a hardware problem with either the camera or your computer. An easy way to check this would be to try another USB device in the port that you are trying to connect your camera to. If the device works then either your camera, or the cable you are using may be defective. You would have to take your camera and cable to a Sony store to have them check them out.
If the device doesn't work then there maybe an issue with your USB ports on the computer. If you are familiar with the BIOS of your computer you can check it to see if the USB ports are turned on and if they are displaying any error messages. If you are not familiar with the BIOS on your computer then you will have to take into your local shop and have them test *********** board out.
