I am trying to remove and replace the motor on a whirlpool dryer. i bought the unit new in 1994. i can't seem to get the motor shaft loose. i am trying to turn the shaft in the clockwise direction and with an adjustable holding the rear shaft, (which on my unit is plastic) and the plastic cover on the rear of the shaft broke off leaving the original metal shaft showing. what do i need to do to remove the motor so i can replace it with the new motor?

Take the back cover off the dryer and the blower motor cover. Have someone hold the blower while you turn the motor shaft on the dryer motor using a 18 inch pipe wrench. Make sure that you turn the wrench to " Your Right " because the shaft has Left - Handed threads.

Check the end threads of the new motor are the not left hand threaded, if so you are tighhtning turn the oppisite direction
btw you may have to replace the blower if it cracked the blower when the plasitc came off might have to use vise grips to ge it off

How to replace motor in whirlpool dryer

1) unplug the dryer. 2) Remove the lint screen on the top of the dryer. 3) take the two phillips head screws out where the lint trap is. 4) with a flat head screwdriver pop the top of the dryer up by sliding the driver inbetween the top and front of the dryer and pry upwards a little. 5) You'll now see the drum, if the belt is not around it its broken, and if it's visible try to lift it. If it taught, its good. IF THE BELT IS BROKEN OR LOOSE CONTINUE TO NEXT STEPS 6) on the left and right upper inner sides of the dryer you will find two screws, one on each side, remove these and the front should be easlily remove. 7) once off you'll be able to easily see the motor, the belts idler pulley, and everything else.
As far as the motor goes, the hardest part of the repair is getting the blower wheel off the motor shaft. If you can get someone to help is makes like so much easier. The wheel is screwed on the motor shaft through the back wall usually, and is reverse threaded.

Determine if access to motor is from front or rear. Remove securing screws, remove panel and observe motor. Is the pulley spinning? If not, the start/run capapcitor may have failed- it looks like a small shiney can (about the size of a pack of cigarettes) and generally has two white wires going to it. Replace. With unit UNPLUGGED, grasp the pulley of the motor and turn it. Does it turn freely? if not, bearings are frozen and you may have to replace motor. If motor shaft is turning, then check belt. Is it broken or slipping? if so replace, if not, check tub and see if it moves freely on it's felt bearings. If not, check two support rollers toward back of unit. Are they intact and moving freely? If not replace.

How do you get the motor off of a whirlpool dryer? We are trying to replace the bulkhead, but can't get the motor and blower separated

The blower will be held to the motor shaft by one or two allen set screws. Loosen these screws and the motor will pull out. the blower fan will drop down so make sure you can somehow hold it while you pull the motor away. Obviously unbolt the motor from the chasis.

Hope that helps.

Dryer won't run right

The motor in your unit has to be replaced. The centrifical sw can't seem to keep the motor going. The shaft may spin freely, but once power is present the shaft locks up therefore your over amping the motor and it then trips the breaker. Since you already had the unit apart you will do fine replacing the motor. Good luck

Cannot remove blower from motor shaft

It does unscrew although at times they do stick. I would find a flat spot on the motor shaft and get a crescent wrench on it and lodge it so it doesn't move and then grasp the blower wheel and turn to remove.

Can't remove motor from dryer

you need to pretty much disassemble the whole machine. the top cover comes off, the front panel with door comes off. the drum lifts out to access the motor as it is bolted to the floor.

Remove the power to the unit and the bottom access panel. Remove the front bulkhhead where the drum sits on by undoing four screws one for each corner.Verify felt seal on exhaust fan cover is airtight on flange of duct. If seal is installed improperly air flow will be restricted which can cause poor dryer performance.Belt must be positioned around cylinder between center and rear bafflescrews with the ribbed surface against the cylinder. You gotta push up on the spring loaded idler pulley the easily slip on the belt to the motor shaft. make sure that the ribbed part of the belt wraps around the drum and motor shaft and not kinked.
