I bought a 1980 FLT and orignally the battery was bad so the bike had to be jumped...however it did jump and run great. Now the bike even with new battery will not even attempt to start. Any suggestions?

Generally speaking, if the starter was dead it would not jump start.
Sounds like the key switch or the neutral safety switch.
You would need to know if the starter has power when the key is in the start position.
Hi, firstly you are probably rite about the clicking being related to a discharged battery, i would suggest you try some jump leads of a car or another battery my guess is it will start or turn over and the clicking will stop, suzuki motorcycles of this eara did have some charging probs, running with a discharged battery for a prolonged period is not recomended. Secondly its not unusual for even a new battery to become low state even when left continuasly on chage with a trickle charger, and eventually the battery.becomes dead through overcharging
Be carefull jumping of a car battery, as when it starts and you give it a rev the car battery will accept more current than the bike can produce and can damage the charge circuit.
It is OK to jump start your motorcycle from a car battery as long as you do not crank the starter too long (it will burn the armature) and as long as the car/other vehicle is not running when you jump start your bike ( you can damage your electrical components( igniter box)). See if you can exchange one with a friend to see if that is the bad component.
If you push the start button and the solenoid clicks the button is good. Find the solenoid ( usually by the battery follow the positive cable.) and jump the two posts with a screw driver, piece of wire , or jumper cables if the starter now works you need a new solenoid. At this point you either have a bad battery or a bad starter. Jump the bike with a good automotive battery (can be in the car just make sure car is not running or you could damage bike.) If bike starter still does not work try new starter brushes for a Goldwing they are cheao and easy to replace. If brushes look good ( not down to wear marks ) you need a starter ( bad armature ). I'm guessing the solenoid is bad (first choice) or you need brushes. Good Luck
if u have a bad battery in it u r not gonna run right or at all even jumping it off if u have a new battery trychanging the gasif the gas has sat for 3 months or longer it goes bad and cloggs up carburator and if thats he case ur gonna have to pull ur carbs and clean the thoroughly
If you have a voltage tester you will probably find a low reading on your battery. It takes a big powerful battery in excellent condition to start that monster, that's why it starts right away when you jump it...Good Luck to you !...Tim
