Question about Brother NX-400

1 Answer

Balance wheel is totally jammed

Machine was working fine when suddenly it just jammed up. Everything seems to be fine, but the balance wheel is completely jammed rigid. I've looked at the shuttle and there are no thread jams at all. The needle moves fine from side to side with different stitch selections, but wont go up and down with the wheel. I have tried looking in the machine, but I can't find any thread jammed.

I have the exact same problem! Was just sewing a straight line in some cotton (a very very loooong line) and suddenly the machine completely jammed. I removed the thread spool and bobbin with no issues, and can't find a jammed thread ANYWHERE. But the wheel is stuck! Help!

TRY TO REMOVE THE BOBBIN ASSEMBLY AND TURN IT. IF IT TURNS YOU PROBABLY HAVE THE WRONG BOBBIN. ALSO, MAKE SURE IT IS INSTALLED SO THE ASSEMBLY CAN BE LATCHED PROPERLY. IF THIS DOESN'T WORK YOU MAY NEED TO ADJUST THE HANDWHEEL. FOR THIS I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL SHOP. ALSO, CHECK YOUR NEEDLE AND SEE IF IT IS MAKING CONTACT WITH THE HOOK (POINTED THING UNDER THE BOBBIN). IF IT IS THEN EITHER YOUR NEEDLE IS INSTALLED BACKWARDS OR IS CROOKED. IF THIS DOESN'T FIX IT THEN YOUR HANDWHEEL MAY NEED TO BE ADJUSTED OR THE OLD GREESE REMOVED AND NEW GREASE INSTALLED. THESE ARE THE MOST LIKELY PROBLEMS.

Tip

Sewing machine balance wheel stops.

Hold the wheel with one hand, turn the stop motion screw towards you. Place both feet upon the treadle and turn the balance wheel towards you at the same time allowing the feet to move freely and lightly with the treadle. Continue this until everything moves freely and easily. Do this until the machine can re-start without the balance wheel turning in the wrong direction.
Then tighten the balance wheel. Then place cloth under the presser foot then lower presser foot with the lever.

Balance wheel doesn't turn

Don't force it. open up under the presser foot and the bobbin area.... pick out any threads.

There is till thread jammed in the racway itself, force the balance wheel backwards and you may free it off that way otherwise take the raceway out.

turn the sewing machine completely off
rethread the machine the top thread & bobbin, if possible use a different spool of thread for top & bobbin
then turn the sewing machine on again & see if you still get the same message, if the same message still displays,,then it needs to be serviced

Needle doesn't move, the balance wheel is very hard to turn

Sounds like it is jammed with thread or fabic. Totally rethread your machine and clean out your bobbin area. Then try turning your wheel towards you. If, you do not have your manual to check, go to www.sewingmanuals.com and download one for $10. If that doesn't do it, all you can do is take it in for service.

My Pfaff 1211 was working and all of a sudden it

Your hook where your bobbin case goes in are most likele jammed with cotton. give it some oil and turn your handwheel backwards gently. Look if you see any cotton jammed and remove it

Bobbin thread not being picked up

This unfortunately sounds dismally like a timing problem. When a sewing machine makes a sudden mechanical stop as when a needle is bent slightly and hits the needle plate, sometimes the other machine bits revolve along further causing the needle to be introduced into the hook either to early or to late to catch the thread.

To test this, remove the thread, the needle plate and and the bobbin case. Replace the needle with a brand new one. Yes, again. Revolve the machine by hand via the balance wheel and watch closely as the needle goes into the hook region allow it to it move down and then just start to move up. If the tip of the hook is not pretty close to right behind the needle than it is more than likely a timing problem.

If the tip of the hook is behind the needle in the scarf (the slight hollow on the back of the needle) than it is not timing. Thread the machine normally like it is and watch what happens as you manually turn the machine via the balance wheel. The thread should catch and be pulled around the hook and let go.

Try this and then either you figured it out the problem or contact me again. Either way please vote. Thanks
