Please tell me this is a joke.........
You cannot open a hard drive or you will make your drive unusable. Hard drives are assembled in clean rooms (cleaner than surgery rooms) and then sealed. Any particle of dust inside the HDA can destroy the surface of the discs, because the discs spin at a very high speed (at least 5,400 rpm but usually 7200 rpm nowadays). This would not only lead to data loss, but also the physical destruction of the disc surface.
So, there is no serviceable part inside the HDA – at least for the regular technician. Only data recovery companies with clean rooms can open and replace components inside the HDA.

My external drive is broken, how do i open i up to fix it / recover my data?

Look for hidden screws under any labels or rubber feet. Otherwise it is likely friction fit together with tap and slot locks. Then you will need to pry it apart. Your best option is to open, remove the harddrive you find inside and install into a new external hard drive chassis. Paper is jammed in my HP Photosmart C3180 All-in-One. Can't figure out how to open machine to remove paper.

Follow these steps to clear the jam from the product. Step one: Remove any loose paper Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism. Remove any loose paper Do not pull jammed paper c01954290.gif c01961869.gif Step two: Clear the jam from the rear of the All-in-One Follow these steps to clear the paper jam from the rear of the product.
CAUTION: Never pull jammed paper from the front of the product. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the product. Always access and clear paper jams through the rear access door.
  1. With the product powered on, disconnect the power cord, USB cable, and Ethernet cable from the rear of the product.
  2. Press in the tab on the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the product to remove it. Figure 1: Remove the rear access doorc00703963.gif
  3. To avoid tearing jammed paper, gently grab both edges of the jammed paper, and then pull with even pressure to remove.
  4. Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product.
CAUTION: Make sure to remove any bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur. Figure 2: Check the product for bits of torn paperc01979299.gif
  5. While you have the rear access door removed, check the rollers with your fingers. Rollers should roll freely and feel springy. If rollers are missing or do not turn freely, buy a replacement rear access door. Click here to order a replacement part from HP .
  6. Reattach the rear access door. Gently push the door toward the product until it snaps into place.
Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One
CAUTION: Carefully remove bits of torn or jammed paper from the front of the product. If you pull too hard on jammed paper, you might damage the print mechanism.
  1. Make sure that you disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. Figure 3: Open the cartridge doorc00372271.gif
  3. Gently pull out any jammed bits or torn pieces of paper from the rollers inside the product.
CAUTION: If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur.
  4. Close the cartridge access door.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  6. Press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn on the product.

The piece that allows a usb cord to connect to the actual external hard drive broke off and i no longer can plug it into my computer. how do i get the piece out or fix it?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Or, buy an "empty" external disk-drive enclosure, for about $30, and "transplant" your disk-drive into this enclosure.

USB connector on drive case seems loose will. OS will not recognize

Do you have any important Data on there? If so, this may repair it, butit has chances to destroy your drive /data if you are not careful Wasit loose when you first used it? It could be the USB Connector that isunsoldered.

What you need:
-Tiny plate precision screwdriver, or something super thin (not too big)
like a blade (a screwdriver does a better job)
-Extreme care
-Your WD Passeport drive
-(Maybe) Low power soldering iron

My solution would be to open the drive plastic case up.
Youmay use a tiny precision plate screwdriver, and gently insert in thegroove on the side where the light is, or behind it (opposite sidewhere the connector is). BE GENTLE THOSE ARE LAPTOP DRIVES AND ARESUPER FRAGILE! Do NOT Put the screwdriver deep into it, else you maydamage the drive. Once you pop it open after some gentle time, (Thereare no screws, only clips) move the screwdriver to pop out a few clips.Once done, you will see a laptop drive inside, and an USB-sata adaptopwhich connects to the drive. Look, maybe the connector is loose in thedisk itself, or maybe the USB connector is loose / unsoldered. If itneeds re-soldering, do it with a low power iron! Using high poweredirons will damage the components. You will need to remove a thin layerof foil. DO NOT DAMAGE IT! It is REALLY important. You must place itback when you are done else damage to your disk is imminent. You canlift it to unplug the connector. do not force it of, tilt it up anddown a bit to loose it up. do not touch anything else, else you maybreak something and render your drive inoperable permanently!

Ihave the same drive, and once the USB connector got a bit loose, otherthen the plenty of problems it gave me. I open it and it was simpleloose from the disk itself. I've took pictures of some of the steps, and uploaded them for you.

You may find the pictures at

Hope that helps you!

It sounds like your hard drive is damaged my friend. Hard drives are very, very dilicate pieces of machinary. The disk is paper thin and any sudden jarring, especiaiy dropping it creates a warp in the drive. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:
