How do you recover from the black screen of death?

You probably mean 'blue screen of death'. There are too many possibilities to list, but let's start with is it a blue screen with white lettering? If so there are several 'error stop codes' that "should" point you in the right direction. You can view these here. These can be anything as simple as a device driver problem to a bad motherboard.

If you are getting a completely black screen but can hear the computer running, I'd suspect a bad video cable, monitor, video card or video chipset (the latter is built into the motherboard and can usually be circumvented by adding a video card). Try a different cable or monitor if possible (always make sure your PC is turned completely off before removing any plug other than USB). If this doesn't work, you can buy a cheap 'PCI' video card for about $10-15.

If the computer just doesn't turn on I'd suspect (almost always) a bad power supply. You should be able to find a new one for under $25. Just make sure it has the all same connectors as the original.

Why does my computer's screen turn black and stop working while im using it?

It's most likely a heat related issue. Laptops need to have the fans and air vents blown out regularly. Also, they need GOOD airflow. An under computer cooling fan will add a lot of airflow. You can get them for $15 & up.

Videocard not working

Try removing the new card, booting into BIOS, change your video setting the slot of your card: I believe your card is PCI-E, save changes and exit. When it starts to reboot, turn the computer off, install the new card and then try rebooting again. You may also have to boot into Safe Mode\Uninstall the original video driver or disable that video component and then try rebooting your system.

Installed video card and computer won't reboot now

AGP driving control
If you get it wrong, the graphics card won't boot, and you'll be left with a black screen. The only way to remedy this is to temporarily use an old PCI graphics card, change the driving control setting, and then reboot
