SOURCE: Slow Wireless

I'll assume from the wording of your question that you are using a USB wireless adapter. For the most part you get better performance out of a PCI wireless card (and better range) but you should also run a scan and clean with this program to make sure that your performance issues aren't due to spyware or malware also.

SOURCE: My computer is really slow going into differnt

Your computer going slow could be for the following reasons: 1 Not enough RAM - remove unwanted files by cleaning the disc. Also defragment the computer. Increase the RAM 2 Virus - remove the virus 3 If you do the above you will see the improvement and no need to have a new cpu

SOURCE: my 5 year old computer is getting slower and

Download ComboFix to your C:\ drive:

Restart your computer and go into Safe Mode:

  1. As the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu".
  2. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Once in Safe Mode, open up C:\Combofix.exe
Let Combofix run it's Scan, and it will remove anything that shouldn't be on the computer that is probably slowing the computer down.

When Combofix is complete, your computer will be restarted.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free:

Install Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is an antivirus software that provides protection against viruses, spyware, rootkits, and trojans, and is now available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 for free.

If you have a bunch of programs in your System Tray, try disabling some of them from starting up with your computer. This will definitely give a little speed boost.
  1. Click Start, Run, then type "msconfig" and press enter.
  2. Select the Startup tab, and deselect all programs you don't recognize, or don't use.

If your computer is still going slow, you may need a new hard drive. Hard drives typically last up to 5 or 6 years, sometimes longer, sometimes not. 5 years is plenty of time for a hard drive to wear out and perform much slower than when it was new.

I’m happy to help further over the phone at

Get rid viruses

Hey Camry, if you believe your computer is running slow due to viruses then run an antivirus program. I recommend AVG AntiVirus (it's also free). Before you download it make sure you uninstall other antivirus programs on your computer if you have any. More than one can really mess with your computer. Once you download it, scan your computer. Then scan for malware (most likely you have malware and not virus). Download Spybot or malwarebytes (this should not interfere with AVG) and scan for malware. Then just restart your computer and hopefully it goes a little bit faster. I say little bit because usually there more problems than just malware issues. Such as not enough space on you hard drive. Delete things you do not NEED. Freeing up space can really improve the speed of your computer. Also, if your computer is getting hot (if you feel it or you hear your fan running full speed) I suggest you get a laptop fan. My laptop has no virus or malware and only has half of the memory used and is 5 years old (Dell latitude) but when it gets hot (my average temp for dual core: 75 degrees C). This really slows down my computer. You can download programs that will tell you the temp of your laptop. Also make sure you shut your laptop down once in a while to clear the RAM.
Sorry it is so lengthy but there is so much that one can do to make the laptop go faster. I hope this helps you though, if it does not give me your feedback. Good luck. - Joe.

Extremely slow running

Slow computer If you have a virus program installed, it is most likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computer especially if you have a large hard drive. After scanning is completed then the computer will be faster.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you do not use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this will remove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plus running Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access files off the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.. Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out at least once a month.
If you have 512Mb of RAM installed then installing more RAM will speed up your computer. After installing your graphics card, you may need to disable the built-in graphics card in the BIOS for the new graphics card to work properly.

Need to upgrade a Pentium 4 - LGA775 socket to something faster?

First of all, no matter what, you'll need more memory (preferably 4gb). Having said that, the computer came out in 2007 and is 5 years old. Considering how old all your components are (video card, hard drives, etc.), I would recommend replacing the whole things. Truthfully, even if you fix one bottleneck, there will be many more bottlenecks to fix. You can find a good computer that would destroy your current one for around $400. If you need to use a smaller computer, you are better off getting a laptop for around $400 or less. If you want to save some money, you can go to They sell discount and refurbished computers relatively cheap. As an example you buy a refurbished Asus laptop for $349 (see link).

Shop around and you will see many laptops at low prices. My recommendations as a starting point are:
  • i3 Intel processor or greater
  • 4gb-6gb of RAM
  • 250gb hard drive or greater
  • Windows 7 x64
Hope this information helps. Good luck.

My 5 year olds 16"

YOU need to assess if something is rubbing somewhere or the bearings are shot. Remounting the wheel correctly will solve the rubbing issue and probably eliminate a dangerous condition.

If the latterer, decide if repair or replacement is the better avenue. A bicycle shop could repair/relube the bearings faster and cheaper than locating a matching wheel.

My 5 year old Toshiba U300-13u is extremely slow and the disk drive isn't recognised and doesn't open. It is core2duo but is supremely bad. The battery life is about 20 minutes. Can Overuse be...

We could say that it may be caused by overuse, but you can still do some checks and upgrades to get it work faster.
A laptop with freshly installed Operating System should not run supremely bad as to say. One cause that I could think is a failing harddrive. A harddrive with bad sectors normally causes it to run very slow. You could do a harddrive diagnostic test for this case.
As for upgrades, you can check your laptop manufacturer's website to see the maximum memory (RAM) and harddrive capacities that you computer can handle.
You can still get your laptop work as expected though you need to still consider the types of program you are running on it.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to FixYa!

here are some steps that you may follow .
1. go to start > run> type MSCONFIG
a window shall open and DISABLE all the items that are being run at START UP
here are caps

See if that helps you ?

More over have you tried installing a Anti-virus.Cause sometimes Virus make the computer slow.
, as a tip De-fragment your hard drives time to time.if virus has hit your computer try installing a fresh copy of windows and then installing Anti-virus .let me remind you when you install a copy of windows do not attempt to open any drive cause there are auto-run viruses. so you first clean your computer then go to other drives clean and safe.

Do comment if it helped you in ANY MANNER !

T2300 @ 1.66 Ghz, 981 MHz, too slow to run

nx6310 (now obsolete ,zero HP support on this) 12 years old.
in dog years that is 84 years.
all that and no OS stated is this DEAD XP" the virus magnet?
if yes, all XP are infected and slow, I'd bet you that !
It came with XP if not XP say how it got changed, using what.?

well , in my opinion all PC are slow. it is a relative term
compared to what? or when? 12 years ago?\
and doing what, that actions you do , seem slow. 100000 possible on all computers. endless apps or the OS it self just slow.

lucky you the CCFL screen back lamps are not dead as most are after even 5 years much less 12. a real shock that is.

Slow 101:
12 year old computers are slow, all are that old , (progress = speed)
12 year old XP is now infected. most are, and zero support from HP nor MS.
The HDD is slow, if not upgraded to SSD all HDD are slow and pathetic, try a new SSD and see the one thing that can make any PC go vastly faster, SSD, spend $100.
the HDD is fragmented run defrag now.
the OS is corrupted, as all are this old. (see virus and malware )

best is to retire it, get PC that is 2007 year or newer.
with w7 or newer.
and win, and have future.

do not invest cash in this junk PC for at least the reason of CCLF
if those die as they surely will , the cost to fix it as huge.
Id have never attempted to up grade any NX PC
none on the HP official retired list
